    Akwa Hotel”

colorful rooms, personal touch in rooms, friendly staff, nearby the sea, DVD players, DVD's, coffee maker, clean.

We have been traveling for 2 months and Akwa guesthouse is the most colorful, cozy and pleasant place we've stayed. We came to Koh Samui for the sun and the beach, but when we arrived on Koh Samui it started to rain. We had a reservation for 5 nights and we were glad we had chosen Akwa Guesthouse. Because it rained very heavily we had to stay most of the time in our room. The nice colors, the pillows, the designed items, the coffeemaker, the books, the t.v. and especially the DVD-player with many DVD's made the lack of sun less dramatic. The owner Timothy is a nice host, enthusiastic and friendly. Just across the street you find the nice beach. We felt at home and it was worth going to Koh Samui. Imagine what a good feeling you will have when you stay in this guesthouse and there is sunlight! We would recommend Akwa guesthouse to everybody.

Awesome guesthouse for a great price”

Cute, clean, rooms Helpful staff Yummy restaurant
You can't purchase anything on site with your credit card. If you need to use a credit card, book your room in advance via the internet.

AKWA is a great place to stay on Chaweng Beach. It's location on the south end of the beach makes it a great place to escape the noise and crowds in the central Chaweng Beach area, yet its still within walking distance to all the attractions. The beach is right across the street! The rooms are clean, the beds are big and comfy, and the shower has hot water. They even have a library of DVD's you can watch in your room for free. They provide complimentary bottled water and the rooms have a great little guidbook on Ko Samui. Most other places we stayed in Thailand for this price were far inferior to AKWA. If you're looking for a budget guesthouse that's comfortable, clean, and quiet, AKWA is a great choice.

    Excellent”

    Location, Staff, Value

I personally thought this place was great for the value. This is a guesthouse and not a hotel. It is more expensive than a hostel but cheaper than a hotel. You basically get what you paid for. You can't expect to pay these prices and find hotel like accommodations with this location... I booked a standard room and had a chance to stay there for 3 nights and even though the weather wasn't great, the owners were very welcoming and try their best to help you. Obviously there are circumstances with which they are unable to help you with which is understandable. The owners treated me as if I part of their family and by the end of my stay I really did feel like I was part of the AKWA family (thanks for the seafood dinner guys). I thought the rooms were fine and was comfortable enough for me to sleep in. It was clean and the bed was comfortable which is enough for me when staying at a guesthouse. Even though there are two buildings, they are not very far apart. It is only about a 5 minute walk in between the two buildings and if you don't want to walk, they offer a motorcycle shuttle service. They also have a bar/restaurant where you get 15% off if you are a guest. They have both Thai food and western food and is the only place I have found yet in Thailand that has sangria. The location of the guesthouse is also great, very close to the beach (maybe a 2 minute walk). You can also book tours through the guesthouse which is convenient. I booked a 4 hour tour around the island and it was worth the price. I would definitely stay here again the next time I visit Samui. Perhaps not everyone had the experience I did but you really have to come to Thailand with an open mind.

Home away from home in Samui with the best people”

Fantastic art and decoration - full of colour and life. Fun and friendly staff. Tim the owner is a total star. Fantastic location right near the beach. Excellent service - couldn't recommend more. Food and drink in restaurant/cafe amazing. DVD's available for use in case you fancy a quiet night in.
This is not a standard 'hotel' and has more of a home from home feel - personally I loved this but some people may be looking for somewhere more conventional I guess, personally I'd go for somewhere less sterile every time and this place was most definitely the one for us. We'd move in tomorrow!

My boyfriend and I loved everything about this guesthouse/hotel and definately intend to go back there to stay next time we are in Samui. I did a lot of research online to find a good place to stay and after reading plenty of rave reviews we decided on the Akwa - and it was the best decision we ever could have made. This place is alive with colour, character and amazing artwork. To top it off the food, owner and staff are fantastic! The owner Tim is an exceptional host, full of fun, always friendly and energetic and always willing to answer any questions and provide lots of useful information. Though we didn't know it was coming, our holiday experience wouldn't have been complete without having had the pleasure of meeting him and we definitely plan to stay in touch in the future. All the staff at the Akwa are very friendly and helpful, smiling all the time and making us feel very welcome. Seeing them when we came back from exploring each day was like coming home to a group of flatmate you get on really well with and they were always interested in what we'd been up to which was very refreshing. I read certain complaints in previously reviews about the staffs lack of English speaking and it is true that they have limited complex English but we found this no problem at all as between our extremely limited Thai ('hello' & 'thank you'!) and their far better grasp of English we happily muddled our way through without any mishap or frustration. We booked a deluxe room for our five nights stay and paid in advance. For no apparent reason as soon as we arrived we were advised that we were being upgraded for the last four nights free of charge to the penthouse which was a huge, but of course, welcome shock. The general gist as far as we could gather was that Tim likes to surprise people when he has the opportunity, he seemed genuinely delighted to do something that made our visit extra special and we can't thank him enough.

    WiFi near the water”

    - Great WiFi Access - Close to the beach - Funky rooms and decor
    - Not ideal for people who sleep early... restaurant downstairs usually plays music in the evening later until closing time (around 11:00 to midnight)

Akwa Guesthouse Hotel gives excellent value for your money. The rooms are colourful, bright and fairly spacious considering the price. The WiFi connection is excellent, especially if you have a laptop with you. I was able to connect every day without any problems... though once the restaurant closes around midnight they turn off the server. The beach is a short walk across the street where you can access the beach by easily walking through Poppies hotel grounds across the street. Friendly staff and there is a safe in the room. It was nice to have so many DVDs to choose from as well. No complaints and it was a pleasant stay at Akwa on South Chaweng!

Surprisingly Appealing Little Place to Stay”

Hot water, clean room, Dvd Player with a Wide Selection of Recent Release Titles, Chilly AC
Room was cleaned by staff anytime between 10-3:30PM

I ended up using Agoda to find the cheapest room on Chewang Beach because none of the boutique places accepted my Credit Card Type - I stayed at Akwa for 9 nights and was surprised at how comfortable I was with the place. My room was filled with Pop Art (not my thing - but, complete with stuffed animals and extra pillows), the water always ran hot, there was a dvd player in every room and they had a large selection of movies for you to 'borrow' including several box sets of American Cable TV shows, drinking water was replenished daily, and the AC always got the room to a reasonable Temp. The guesthouse I stayed at was off a side street from the main building - but no big deal. If you walk the quarter block back to it they have a friendly staff, a large menu that boasts its breakfasts (which if you've stayed any where in Thailand you know you can't find - or if you do they serve you hotdogs and claim them as 'gourment sausages') cool little bar, and right across the way you can cut through another Resort to access the beach - Akwa is nicely placed at the end of the beach so there was plenty of 'unclaimed' space to lay out as well as a complete lack of blasting techno like you have at the other end - the sand also seemed a lot cleaner on this side of the beach too. I would definitly stay here again - and not just because it was fairly priced and had some flare - this staff was the only staff that took care of me when I had questions and from the first five minutes told me everything I needed to know wbout the Island - like where the 'action' is and 'how to rent a motor bike' best prices, etc. That alone sold me for all those nights.

A truly one of a kind place”

Real trippy rooms stocked with books and DVDs and other stuff travelers need. Probably the most hard core breakfast menu in town.
Stairs in the main building are second only to Angkor Wat.

The AKWA main building is located on Chaweng Beach Road, a short stroll from famous Chaweng Beach. It has a good location, a very trendy restaurant (small servings)and a breakfast menu that brought tears to my eyes. How about Ricotta Hot Cakes with Honeycomb Chocolate Butter served with banana and honey? Or Cheese Potato Cakes with Smoked Salmon and Mustard Cream? The other building I stayed in is a little further away from the beach (add 50 meters) and had a door lock that was a bit odd, so i had to sleep on the sidewalk on Christmas eve, but the staff was really sorry about that. By the way, thanks for the free Anal Probe drink. All in all a really good guesthouse, and as long as my legs are still young I would not hesitate staying there again. And if you are looking for a cool place to spend a couple of days with your partner but have a budget to follow, book their penthouse. It is really cool. Only thing I can put my finger on is that the (free for guests) WiFi don't cover all the rooms.

Akwa Guesthouse - Best value for money”

Excellent location - near the centre of Chaweng and at the same time far from the noise of pubs and bars - Bar/restaurant good value for money and WIFI - cleanness and cordiality -
WIFI NOT available in the rooms - terrace of penthouse should be renovated -

We stayed 2 weeks in the wonderful Penthouse, although the terrace is not in so good condition.. I recommend this room, as it's spacious and you can go outside. Clean and full of optionals, but no phone, no wifi, no iron. Personally not important to us, just you to know it!! I would say to everyone to stay at Akwa: really good price, staff helpful for everything, best location and very clean. Just cross the street and you reach the beach! And then mind this: you are out of the continuos noise of all the locals, so it's good if you want to sleep quite, but if you want to make the night "your night" no problem!! In 5 min. you can reach all you want! On may it's not full of people and Chaweng centre is a big mess!! Can't imagine in high season!! Choose Akwa, you won't be disappointed.

    A Very Positive, Memorable Experience”

The manager is thai and from bkk and the owner are extremely friendly and helpful. The room was clean and well equipped. Good wireless internet connection.
    None.

Akwa was recommended to us by a fellow traveler. We were very happy that we took her advice and stayed at Akwa. The owner is from Australia, he is well connected in Samui and provided excellent travel advice for Thailand and the rest of SE Asia. He is a remarkable individual who has some great life stories to tell if he has the time. A Thai guy and originally from Bangkok, he speaks very good English and he is a very friendly and helpful young man. Your are in good hands in this Guesthouse.

Funky place with a great staff. ”

Funky decor. Great staff. Low price.

We stayed here one night as we got to Koh Samui a day early and our other guesthouse that we had already booked into was full. We stayed at the top. Stairs to the penthouse were very steep so don't go if you have a mobility issue. The room at the top was spacious and quite quiet considering it was on the main Chaweng beach road. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were right across the street from Chaweng beach. It was very inexpensive. If you are looking for a funky place with lots of character and a low price this place is great. If you want to spend a little more it is probably a good idea to try and get a place right on the beach if that is important to you.

free dvd's, great value, quite central

located at the quieter end of chaweng, akwa is a guesthouse for those seeking something within their price range with quality services. i would warn against those seeking a couples holiday. whilst the penthouse is a beautiful room at an affordable rate it is at the top of a number of stairs and doesnt offer things such as a pool that your local resort would.

But, nice location. U can walk to the more busiest spot on chaweng, which is not very far away.. Or i suggest u rent a motorbike there.. The rent place is just beside akwa. Akwa rules! Fantastic hotel full of surprises...”

The owner and hotel staff are awesome. Extremely friendly and helpful. The food is good, relatively inexpensive, very good range on the menu. The room is... colourful, a lot of thought and effort has gone into it. The bathroom is very stylish. DVD in the room was a great touch, as was the free DVD rental.
There wasn't anything with the hotel itself I could heartily complain about. Ok then, the stairs going up to the third level were EXTREMELY steep and with a big rucksack you feel you'll fall down!

The hotel staff are fantastic. The room is the best I've stayed in in Thailand, in terms of making me feel at home. I can't fault it. Turn left or right out of the hotel and you're hit with all the styles of bars and restaurants you'll ever want. I found it a very busy part of Samui, which was quite off-putting however. If I could pick up the Akwa Guesthouse and place it on another island, I'd give it 5/5 for every category. However - this year, Samui wasn't for me. Too 'loud', when I was looking for a quiet area. And no - I don't want to buy a SUIT. Be prepared with a good answer to the huge number of suit-sellers you'll get accosted by when walking around the local area.

Lovely Chic Small Guesthouse with the Nice Staffs”

Colorful & Kinda Cute with the Comics & Cartoon Charactors!

I enjoyed my 4 nights stay at Akwa Guesthouse. It's located in the Chaweng main road, close to Poppies Hotel & Restourant. It might be a little far from the centre of Chaweng but still within the reasonable walking distance to the main restourant, clubbing & shopping area. I booked the Penthouse via Agoda for, then I upgraded to Garden Room, with 1 double bed room & a single bed room on the roof, the living room is huge and completed with sofa & the dining table, the simple kitchen with microwave & cooking stove in the corner. This room can accomadate for at least 3 person. I arrived on the Songran Festival, also a week after the nasty flood in Koh Samui. When I found out & told the owner Mr. Martin Carels, that the DVD player wasn't working (might due to the flood), immediately he went to buy a brand new one to replace it. Martin & the staff are always serve with the smile! I would like love to stay in Akwa again when I return to Koh Samui.

we stayed at akwa in august 2010 and had a brilliant time. we have been travelling for 3 months and this is one of the best guesthouses we have styed in. the rooms are huge with en-suite bathrooms. nice and colourful with lots of extra little touches like dvd player in the room and free dvd library. water in the room, fridge in the room, even an umbrella which came in very useful a couple of times! located 2 mins from the white sand beach and within walking distance of the night life chanweng has to offer. plesant helpful staff and owner. food amazing.

    Little Gem”

Dvd player and dvds in the bedroom good air con Huge king bed
    None

This place is a must stay for anyone going to Koh Samui on a budget. It is a small family run guesthouse. So no it is not a elite 5 star hotel resort but for what you pay it is amazing. After backpacking for 7 months this place is one of my favourite finds. I have stayed in many nice hotels in Thialand but none have had the character this one had. The bedroom has a huge king size bed with duvet. The aircon is so good, bottled water provided, tv and dvd player with lots of dvd choices in the bedroom, the even leave a back scratcher and teddy bear along with a folder of ideas for what to do on the island. The location is great, along the stretch of Cheweng. It is towards the quieter end of the stretch but you can walk to anywhere. Last but not least the thai owners and staff couldn't be more helpful. Nothing is too much bother. Again def recommend this place.

Great location and nice design of the rooms”

Good location, clean rooms, parking area

I really enjoyed my stay in AKWA guesthouse. The room was small but clean. The best thing is that the interior of the room was the same as on the pictures. The red hand-like chair, the colored little pillows on the bed, a lot of pin-up art posters all over the walls - everything was present. The shower area was big and clean. The onle thing we didn't like is the check out time: 10:30. So mind that if you plan to stay here.

    review on akwa guesthouse”

    - location - near the beach, (literally 45 secs) - nicely decored rooms - dvd library - and most importantly, Mr. Jimmy.
    - food though good but a little over priced. - shower in my room didn't function too well. - should have a floor mat near the entrance or a floor carpet as the sand gets all over the place and also on the bed.

this was my first stay in akwa, and i was floored by their service, especially JIMMY. he has the answers for all your queries and extremely hospitable. the prime location of the guesthouse, and being near to the beach makes life easier in samui. Its a very clean guesthouse, though small but very tastefully done. what adds up the value is their collection of dvds that you can borrow to watch if you want a quiet night in samui.

    Akwa Koh Samui”

    Good location, great price, clean
    nothing serious

The Akwa is a pretty nice place; the owner Tim is very creative. Due to popular demand the Akwa has expanded the number of rooms by using close by buildings. I stayed here over 10 days and had to move once from one building to another. The first room I got the 102 was used by a heavy smoker so I had to change. Everything went smooth, the new room 454 is nice bright, clean and specious. If there was a problem it was addressed promptly according to Thailand times. Do not forget they are very laid back and they are on Thai time. If you need something just ask the owners. The owner Tim and his partner Shane are usually in the bar/restaurant/reception. The Thai personnel is pretty much useless for any communications. The food is good, they do rave about their breakfast, I was not impressed, the ham seemed to be a bit old and the sausage link was still frozen in the middle. The sandwiches are pretty good so is the Thai food. Yes I would stay here again. If you are planning to check out the Island, rent a scooter (moto bike) about 180 THB for 24 hrs, it is a lot of fun. When you get the bike purchase only 1 liter gasoline from the bike stand (they give you actually 1/2 liter, it is a rip off) and go the nearest gas station and fill it up for about 120THB, it will last you for several days. Catching a ride with a taxi, tuk-tuk or bike taxi is going to cost you at least 200THB one way, so you be the judge.
