Unforgettable stay”
We stayed just one night in the self-service western style room (which included a private onsen) as part of our honeymoon, and even during such a brief stay which skipped some of the ryokan's most distinctive features that other reviewers can comment on (such as the meals and attentive service), we had such a lovely time at the hotel. The private bath was super fun and relaxing...we ended up dipping in it 3 times in that one day. Also, the room was incredibly spacious, definitely bigger than what we expected and more than enough for 2 people. The location was very convenient. On the morning of check out we walked right next door to % arabica and had a nice cup of coffee overlooking the river. Definitely a splurge for us, but 100% worth it and a highlight of our trip to Japan

Amazing place to stay at. ”
The staff were very attentive to any needs that I had and gave me suggestions that made my stay that much more enjoyable. The dinner was delicious and the room we stayed in was very clean. I highly recommend this place if you stay anywhere near arashiyama. You will create such great memories and I hope to stay here again.

Lovely private house”
We stayed modern suite which is a few steps away from the main building during the Chinese New Year holiday. The suite was 2 storied house with bathing area at downstairs. The tub was huge and surrounded by small garden and I can enjoy the cozy and quiet family tub time while sensing the cool air from open window. Two rooms upstairs and separate kitchen and toilet. Service of staffs were absolutely fantastic and their food is another killer.

Romantic Get Away”
We had a fantastic time staying the Arashiyama Benkei Ryokan. The location was superb with beautiful views across the river and close to all the attractions in Arashiyama. The service was excellent (they cleaned our shoes every night of our say, and the wheels of our suitcases). The price was a stretch for our budget even at a promotional discount and quite expensive. Still it was worth the experience overall.

Exceptional”
We had a lovely multi-course dinner on the first night of our stay. It was romantic and marvelous with lots of small dishes. The service was incredible as was the location. A bit on the extravagant & pricy side.

Disappointed Kaiseki Dinners ”
In view of the high value charged per night to include both Kaiseki dinner and breakfast either in Japanese or Western style, it is not worth every penny. The Kaiseki dinners were just OK, the taste of the food was just normal. Kaiseki dinner should be presentable (which is OK) but the taste should be much much better when reflecting to the price of stay but it isn't at all. Some of the food was not very hot and one of the night even had a missing course (should be served half way of the meal) which came very late near the end of the dinner. For foreigners who have little experience in Kaiseki dinner might find it very interesting and tasty. With lot of experiences in enjoying Kaiseki dinner all over Japan, this is the last one in the list especially taking into account of the pricey stay. The open air hot spring facility for man always have mosquitoes in daytime and at night. Perhaps if the temperature is much colder (below 10C), there might be less or none.

good for ryokan and kaseiki experience”
If you want to have a great ryokan and kaseiki meal experince, Arashiyama Benkei is good. It is on the pricey side but I guess that is the going rate for ryokan. Their staff is great, always smiling and happy. They didn’t pick up at train station (as part of their service) but quickly reimbursed us for our taxi ride when we reached their place. Their location is great right in front of the river for that wonderful view when dining.

Absolutely fantastic ryokan stay in Arashiyama!”
My stay in Aarashiyama Benkei Ryokan was absolutely perfect!! The ryokan is a 15 min walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. On reaching the ryokan, my name was displayed on a chalk board outside the main door, nice touch! The ryokan was situated RIGHT next to the river and a 2 min walk from Togetsu Bridge. The staff alsowiped our luggages clean and actually tied on small decorative notes. Such attention to detail, very sweet! On checking into our 12-tatami room with half board (incl dinner and breakfast) on the first floor, we were absolutely wow-ed. The room was very spacious for 2 (can fit 4) and had a wall-to-floor glass door with a small garden outside. The indoor onsen was essentially a small bathtub that can barely fit two regular-sized people, so don't expect much. We paid 2100Y for a 45-min soak in the private outdoor onsen and it was wonderful. Fits two with lots of room. Dinner was served in our room, course-by-course. Each course was so delicate and delicious. When we were done eating, the staff proceeded with setting up our super comfy futons! The yukatas (Jap casual kimonos/bathrobes) came with inner pieces (4 sizes provided), and outer pieces in 4 different colors! Breakfast was served in the dining room, which only had 2 tables, each by the window, with a view of the river. Needless to say, breakfast was also very enjoyable and sumptuous. I didn't try the public baths, but the outdoor one looked really great too! There was also a free-to-use massage chair that really hit the spot on my back. Check-in and check-out was totally hassle-free. I only produced my booking in softcopy during check-in, and paid my extra charges on check-out. That was all. I really loved this place. The staff were attentive and also watched us for a good 2 min as we made our way out, making us feel really cherished as guests. Though this place was slightly more expensive in my opinion (about 50,000 Y), I will definitely recommend this place to EVERYONE!

Fantastic. . ”
We will there early morning and left our luggage with them, as it was raining, they offer us umbrella. When we are back at the check in time 1600hrs, our luggage are neatly place in our room. They even filled the water in the bathtub for you, and the bathtub is (maybe) computer control, the water will stop automatically. after you use it, the water refilled by itself. Even overnight, there is a outlet to drain water and refilled with hot water, so in the morning, the water in the tub is still hot. The dinner is wow, very very nice, not going elaborate, you have to try it yourself. And so to the breakfast. The staff is very Friendly and the Hotel serve it with a heart, with a personal touch. From the time you arrive, you see your name at the entrance, on the lamp in your room, on the dinning table at breakfast..... Even when you check out, they will volunteer to help you take a picture at their entrance and bow (for a long time) as you leave the hotel at the road side Just to experience Japanese Ryokan / Onsen, I actually stay in 2 different hotel in 2 day at Arashiyama, Benkei win it with that extra touch and the beautiful scenery just in front of the Hotel. I am planing to go again during Fall season .....

Exceptional”
Our stay at the Arashiyama Benkei Ryokan was by far the high point of our trip to Japan. We loved every moment of our stay - starting with the Japanese tea in our room, to the fabulous 11 course kaiseiki dinner, followed by a relaxing soak in the outdoor onsen under a clear night sky, and concluding with a delightful and extensive Japanese breakfast. The staff's service was impeccable throughout - our stay couldn't have been more perfect.

Wonderful night in a traditional Japanese Inn”
We stayed at Arashiyama Benkei for one night during our honeymoon and really enjoyed the authentic Ryokan and onsen experience. The room was beautiful, the staff extremely accommodating and location wonderful! We booked a private onsen and it was incredible. We also took a boat ride on the river and walked to the bamboo forest in the morning. Definitely stay here!

Beautiful historical stay”
My fiancee and I had the privilege to spend one night in this beautiful Japanese inn, also known as a ryokan. The service was exceptional, and we were able to store our luggage before check in so that we had a chance to explore the area without the obstacle of carrying our luggage around. The building overlooks the river and mountains, giving our hotel room an indescribably memorable view. The private onsen is well worth its price. Everything you'd want to see in Arashiyama is within walking distance, including but not limited to: the bamboo grove and monkey park. I can't comment on their meals since we did not choose to eat at the inn. I can't recommend this place enough, especially if you want a memorable opportunity to stay in a traditional ryokan.

Serenity on the outskirts of Kyoto”
The friendly, happy, service-oriented staff including some with good English proficiency made our stay very enjoyable. We had a spacious river-view room that included an en suite toilet and washbasin. The ryokan is large enough to have spacious inside and outside "public" baths (Japanese soaking) for both men and women without women relegated to a lesser space or limited hours (as is the caase in some small ryokans). We stayed for two nights and the dinner and breakfasts were different both days with attractively presented, tasty food. The location is perfect for walking Arashiyama. We recommend a two-night stay so that the serenity of Arashimaya can be experienced in the morning and evening after all the daytrippers have departed.

Not quite as special as it could have been”
The Benkei Ryokan welcome starts with your name on the welcome board outside and continues as soon as the staff start to provide the high level of Japanese service which is a feature. The Ryokan is in traditional Japanese style with nicely finished Japanese style rooms. Our only slight disappointment was that our multi-course evening meal, served in our room, came at quite a pace with the next dishes arriving before we had finished the last, it was not very relaxed although the food was very good indeed. We used the private open air onsen facility which we enjoyed very much. The staff do anything to help and wait outside to say goodbye until you are out of sight when you leave.

Very comfortable stay in suite with private onsen, kitchen and washer/dryer”
We (3) stayed in suite that was down an alley from the main building. Very clean and comfortable. Onsen and W/D were downstairs. Two bedrooms and kitchen were upstairs. (One bedroom opened into the kitchen, so not totally private.) We had just come from another hotel that served elaborate dinners and breakfasts, so being able to fix something quick and easy was a nice change. There are lots of places in the neighborhood where you can pick up food. Dinner at Benkei was served in the main dining room and good, but service less leisurely than at some other ryokans. This part of Kyoto is lovely. Not central city, but lots of nice walks and plenty to see, including beautiful, less famous shrines. It would have been nice to have been offered tea during check-in, as we had had a long travel day. However, all of the fixings were in our suite, so that made up for it. Staff was responsive to requests, such as to make the onsen a little warmer, and arranged to send our bags on to next hotel.

Refind Japnese Beauty we are familiar to .”
I visited this area many times ,but this was the 1st stay. I found the silent river soothing my feeling in front of the ryokan which sometimes turned raged and was in danger of flood. Early in the morning some people strolled alone others walked with their dog, and some birds siwmmimg on the river which reminded me of Ukai , u ,birds swallowing fish and being made to vomit and ushou, fisherman. The hills over the river would have attracted me if it were late fall. I enjoyed typical Japanese air and everyday life in Arashiyama.
