Some room booking issues were quickly resolved by the friendly staffs. The rooms and female bathroom were clean, though my friend commented that the cleanliness of the shared bathroom could be improved. Perhaps bathrooms slippers could be provided. Location was within walking distance to MRT station, lots of food around the area. Overall, our experience was worth the money, had an enjoyable time in Singapore :) will recommend Checkers to others!

Chess backpack hostel, the sign is that the checkers backpackers, front desk and residence is not the same, the residence is opposite to the front desk 711, the living environment is general, the noise around the car and the music of the bar is very loud, the music is that kind of heart beating. There is no curtain on the top, the sheets are not clean, the staff will give the towel quilt, can be spread on the bed. Dirty beds are also a problem. It was the most itchy night I slept on, but I didn't find bugs. I think I'm allergic. The key deposit is NT $10, there are three, respectively, the door, the cabinet door, pay attention to the default lock of the door, can only be opened with the key, do not leave the key in the room. Some steps of the stairs will shake when they step on them. The toilet and shower are integrated, with bath lotion, washing machine, breakfast, bread and boiled eggs, butter or jam, vomiting driver, tea bag coffee, and kettle

Hostel was so overbooked that people had to sleep on the floor with a mattress crammed next to others. They changed our 9bed dorm into a 10bed dorm as they were too overbooked but did not let us know this was happening, as well as moving our stuff to another bed without letting us know. The showers where 'cleaned' once maybe twice during our 6 day stay. Even after cleaning there were still hairs everywhere in the shower. The breakfast was the best I have had from all my hostel stays - unlimited bread, jam, butter and bananas (from 8am-10am) tea and coffee as much as you want all day. Location is ideal - a minute walk from the SMRT (Rochor - which is super convenient to get to anywhere in Singapore) and Little India buses (useful for the night safari).

Shady building, poor service”

I booked in checkers backpackers, but when i arrived i was sent to another building, its not part of checkers backpackers, it turns out to be a serviced apartment called Oasis Serviced Apartment. Its not located at campbell lane, not even at the same road with checkers backpackers. The staff told me that the services apartment is still the property of checkers backpackers, but i think it should be stated in the website so the customer will be aware about it. On my second night, the ceiling was leaked, the floor was flooded, so my bag and shoes were wet. We told the staff, they cleaned it up but they couldn't get me a better room, i had to sleep there until the next day when they finally gave me a new room. One of the staff was drunk every time i saw him, i don't know why the boss still allowed him to work. Furthermore, the serviced apartment is located next to karaoke place, so it was very noisy at night.

The staff was very helpful and positive. The common area, kitchen area and bathrooms are too small. You may see some cockroaches in the room. They provide free laundry and a free locker. They also give you a free padlock. (at least when I was there). The rooms were cool enough during sleeping hours. Breakfast was satisfying for a hostel conditions. The location is perfect in the heart of little India and just 2 minutes away from downtown line.

"Cheap" ”

This was the cheapest I could find in Singapore and sadly you got what you pay for. But I still stayed here 2 more nights because of the "lower price" + bed comfortable, good wifi, free breakfast (4 toast, 1 egg) - cleanes (saw both insects and a mouse inside the hostel)

No”

I am a female solo traveler. I booked the "mixed dormitory" and expected both females/males in the dormitory, I was the only girl with 3 to 4 men in the room. There are locks to get into the bathroom so I question the safety of the hostel. The hostel is located in Little India and the hostel is filled with immigrants from India who come to Singapore for work. There were no other travelers/backpackers during my 3-night stay so I did not meet anyone. The wifi is bad as well, especially during the evenings/night when everyone is back. Pros: the location is by the Little India and Bugis MRT stations.

Did not stay here in the end as my reservation was cancelled by Agoda due to overbooking, but the front desk man was so helpful in contacting Agoda on my behalf and transferring me to another nearby hostel, which I walked to accompanied by his staff. Much appreciated!

Overbooked”

We went for Singapore for count down on 31/12/2016; and when we check-in, the staffs asked us to wait for some time for their arrangement of the room as there is some issue whereby he told us that, Agoda hacked into their booking system; we booked double room, and he said no more double room and he will need to put us in the 6-dorm room sharing with other people. According to him, we can choose not to take up the room but he said he trying to help us since it is count down night, not easy to get the hotel now. After we accepted, he refunded us the balance for the different of the double room vs 6-dorm room. After that, only we realised, they charged us the commission charged by Agoda to them. We are really disappointing and fortunately we only stay for one night.

The worst experience for backpackers”

Worst experience for my 15 years of backpacker life. You can find the bed bug in every twenty seconds on your bed and also inside and outside of your locker. I’m not that kind clean person but i can’t stand with it at all! With a few hours of sleeping, my body is full of bites (more than hundred!)! It’s really serious and disgusting！ I told the staff and he just recommend me to go to supermarket to buy the Vaseline and use it, then every bite would be gone. But it’s not the case totally!!! I know that this may be the cheapest choice in city center but trust me, never try this and I’m still feeling all the bites after four days back to my home courtries. Needa spent a lot to go to hospital. Trust me, if I take a photo of my hands, legs and my body, you would be extremely scared!

Good location, it is very near to Rochor station. The staffs are friendly. Excellent security! A lock was given to lock your locker and access card needed to enter the toilet

Got insects ,. Bed bugs, or kutu”

I was given lower deck instead of upper deck. One girl called Veronica was spotted on one booking before me. Probably they messed up and gave me the wrong bed. The man sleeping on top of me left his trousers down and I have to shift my pillow to the other side. The whole room is full of odour, and stuffy in the day when the aircon was not switched off. The roommates seem like to stay inside the room thorough the day. The worst part is that I was bitten by bedbugs and the red marks was scarily distributed on both my legs and arms. More than 50 red bruises are found on my legs and arms , and some of them are very itchy. It is the results of me who just stayed there for one night. I have a very similar bedbug issues when I stayed in another hostel opposite to them. That could be the issues happening in the guesthouse in the region.

If you are looking for a cheap place to stay in Singapore I considered that this hostel is the best option. The metro station is pretty nearby. You will be in Downtown in around 10 min.

The room had problems with the AC”

It was already quite too late when we realized the AC was not working as it should be. Nonetheless, it was a pretty decent place to stay in. Staff were friendly and it is a stone's throw away from the MRT station.
