Unexpectedly we found the place wonderfully homely, clean and spacious. The environment setting is great with a big compound to walk around. It is run by a retired Japanese and his wife with a handful of friendly staffs. Although he could not converse in English he used an electronic translator to ensure all our needs were taken care of, including recommendation of places to visit, etc. He would invite his guests to join him at his little observatory to see the stars whenever the sky was clear, unfortunately the 2 nights we stayed were cloudy. We took up his offer including most the other guests to have his special set dinner (French cuisine) for a reasonable price. No regret, it was delicious and ended with some saki on the house. The rooms were spacious with a little living space to sit, relax or read. Although the furniture and fittings were old but they were properly maintained and in good working condition. Breakfasts were equally great with very nice breads. Highly recommended.

Villa was big and New with Natural onsen water in our own bathroom. Though you need sometime to adjust the water, but really worth it. Kitchen was fully equipped but nearest super market is about 40mins drive, so we didn't cook. At night there's no street light(super dark around) so it's safer for you to check in earlier. We accidently broke the clock with the swing in room, they charged reasonably, thanks!

The owner, staff and guests were all super friendly!! They were mostly Japanese, but since I can speak Japanese I had a wonderful time chatting with them~ The staff speak English though so don't worry. The design and atmosphere were warm and cozy, the lobby also functions as a bakery during the day and a bar at night, and you even get one free drink ;) Every night I sat down at the lounge and talked with Rika-chan, Taka-san and everyone. It was really fun!

If you are looking for a family run ryokan off the beaten path in the Yufurin area, the is the place. You do need your own transportation to get to it but in return you are rewarded with a quaint family run place with a nice outdoor and indoor onsen. Attentive service and a great value for your money. The ryokan is located off a quiet street surrounded by a creek and nature. The dinner is fabulous, they give you a taste of the in season local ingredients. The staff doesn't speak much (any) English and but they still try their best to communicate with us. We visited in November and the front entrance looks exactly like the photo on Agoda! They also have a house cat roaming the place.

We have booked Kuju Kogen Cottage for 2 nights as were travelling to Kyushu for Rugby World Cup. It had ticked all the boxes and despite of being quite far from Oita Stadium, it was a relatively convenient location. Because of its proximity to Aso-Kuju chain, we managed to do Naka Dake trail (20 mins drive from the hotel) which we wouldn't do otherwise. The Cottage has large facilities - couple of blocks with rooms and vast camping facility. Also there is a big sweets / souvenir shop next to the reception. The room we rented was large and able to accommodate 4 people. It was Japanese style room (basically mattress thrown over wooden box, but it was surprisingly comfy and the duvet was super soft and weightless), medium size bathroom, they provide tea and sweets, basic amenities like kettle, safe box razor, toothbrush etc. The locks and hinges were a bit flimsy but it didn't bother us much. Views of the mountains were beautiful. No meals and no spa for us, so can't comment on that.
