Good location just across the Utsunomiya station, passing through a gyoza park (a couple of restaurants). Staff were super helpful, went out of the way just to help me with change for the laundry machines! Good as a base or retreat after a day trip to Nikko or Oya area. Breakfast options were really good, only small downside is your clothes may smell a little (they do some of the cooking there) after your meal. All in all good!

I booked this hotel for my father who was visiting Utsunomiya, and doesn't speak any Japanese. The staff were incredibly friendly, and helped keep his luggage when we went to Nikko for a few days, and when we got back, they had given him the same room, with the luggage waiting for him inside! No complaints about the room either - clean and even has one English channel - CNN... better than most Japanese hotels! Breakfast was fantastic, lots of options, both Japanese and Western. The price with breakfast from Agoda was really good.

I walked from Tokyo to Nikko during the Golden Week, a time when people and families travel all over. The staff and facilities were pretty standard at Smile Hotel. The staff followed all the rules of hospitality, but did nothing above-and-beyond to make the environment any warmer. The rooms felt a bit dorm-like, especially with giant, heavy, metallic doors and the crammed toilet/shower combo. It was very clean though. It's not so close to the station, but it's not far either. I finished my walk for the day and came to Utsunomiya just in time to avoid the rain on my walk, but the distance from the station to the hotel was enough for me to get soaked in it. Again, everything at Smile Hotel was pretty average. The most disappointing point was that prices were pretty jacked up for Golden Week, and that made me feel like I paid too much for a hotel that was just, well, average. Would have felt better if the prices were a bit lower, and would stay there again under those conditions.

We've used this hotel three times as a base from which to travel to MotoGP at Motegi race circuit. The hotel is somewhat similar to a Formule1 in europe but the rooms all have their own bathrooms. Rooms are clean, a good size, well equipped and quiet. Staff are professional and do their very best to help even though they speak little english. There is an optional breakfast which is reasonably priced and quite substantial. There is plenty of parking attached to the hotel. We would stop here again.

The hotel is place near by local train and close to JR rail station about 2 minute walk , If you stand in east wing of JR , you can see Port hotel stand in front of you . The room is very clean all useful things are plenty inside also hot tea available without any charge and nice breakfast also .Near hotel , they have department store such as Lala Square and Bell supermarket and in the west side of hotel , they are local market , fresh food and plenty cheap things for souvenir. Our memorable are friendly and helpful staffs because when we check out from Port hotel in Utsunomiya and go to Asakusa in Toyko ( 4 hours by local train ) , As soon as we reached new hotel we found that my daughter passport left in Port hotel , then we call back ,they send passport by registered mail to us and we got it by the next day .

Our traditional Japanese room with tatami mats was so big! Beds were very comfortable and balcony with seating was lovely with a view of the forest. It was so peaceful at night and during the day. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We utilised the hotels electric bicycles and rode around town and visited museums and pottery street. Hotel onsen was large and relaxing with all the amenities required. Highly recommend eating/drinking at Cafe Bar Banda - we visited a few times and the food was delicious and perfectly presented.

The hotel offer more than the major hotels would to a simple family type travelers like us. The wifi was fast, room was big enough for 3 of us . We speaks no Japanese so having a few staff who could communicate in english was really helpful. The hotel is located along the main road on this little district. Plenty to do here but do check out the timing before coming. The steam train was not running and we just missed the fruit picking season. Luckily the Montegi twin ring was open. IF you wish to rent a car, make sure you bring your international driving license. If you have time, you MUST go on the local Mooka - Montegi train. Its the local 'bus'. Amazing rides through the villages with school kids getting on and off it.

we decided to stay in utsunomiya because it was cheaper than staying in nikko, which was our main point of travel. this hotel is within a five minute walk to utsunomiya station, where we took the jr train to nikko (40 minute train ride). we were happy with our decision to stay in utsunomiya because during the day we could experience nikko and during the evening we could go to cafes, restaurants or shops. utsunomiya is known for gyoza, so it was fun to sample various gyoza at different restaurants. the hotel was not big and the rooms were small. we asked for a nonsmoking room but it smelled like a smoking room. i had to pay for parking. the hotel advertises breakfast with the room, but the selection was very limited and the restaurant is small. also, i stayed two nights but was only given breakfast for one of the mornings. the hotel staff was very kind and helpful, but almost all japanese hotels/restaurants/businesses i've been to have excellent customer service, which is a major plus to traveling in japan. i didn't have a bad experience, but i would try a different hotel if i traveled there again.
