The hostel is very clean compared to other backpacker's hotel I've been. ”

The mattress of the bed is old, but it doesn't matter because it's still comfy and it's clean. The linen were also clean and has no smell. The staff were great and accommodating. I also got some awesome and friendly roommates. Breakfast was coffee/tea, toast, bread and cereals. Worth the money. Location is a 10-15 minute walk from the CBD, the place is quiet, good for backpackers who love quiet places. No aircon but there were ceiling fans.

Average”

Comfy bed, central location, airport transfer

I don't usually read reviews I like to make up my own mind on places. This place has had good and bad reviews but it was one of the cheapest so my girlfriend and I decided to check it out. Firstly, we stayed in a double room. It was clean, very basic but really comfortable. I think the whole building needs a spruce up as it looks very used and dated but it was liveable for the price you pay. The main downfall for us was the lack of wifi. A fair walk to the nearest free source of Internet, which is tricky when things need sorting out. This becomes quite annoying after a while. For the price, it's fine. Staff are nice, there's lots of people to talk to but the place needs some love and a serious wifi installation.

Sydney' Cheapest Room”

Price, Location, Colonial Building

I think the Elephant Backpackers offers Sydney's cheapest hotel rooms. This fact should really be used to guide your expectations of the hotel. $60.00 gets you a small but clean room with a TV, linen, and a bathroom down the hall. The room itself itself is quite clean and comfortable, however the public areas of the hotel are on the grubby side. This includes the bathrooms. Another negative is that the area outside of the entrance to the hotel seems to serve as a party area for large groups of people. These people may or may not be hotel guests, but the presence of a group of 40 or so people drinking in groups outside the hotel entrance gives a a bit of a "running of the gauntlet feel" when one is arriving and departing at night. Security at the hotel may also be an issue as the look on our room door seemed a little flimsy and the "security" door at the hotel entrance was not locked during our stay.

Staff very friendly, room and roomates very calm, the breakast for free is very nice and really good price. The location isn't too bad too. The only things to improve would be : a safer room to keep the luggages and, because the showers are small, more hook in it would be really nice.

Terrible room condition”

I like to report a complaint on a accomodation that I booked in Sydney, Australia which is Elephant Backpackers situated at 50 Sir John Young Cresent, Woolloomooloo, Sydney, Australia through Agoda. When I checked in the room with 4 of my friends, it was unpleasant. There are 3 double decker bed. The floor of the room is dirty. The bedsheets are dusty and dirty and it was not proper. It was like the room was empty for quite long time. One of the bed did not have any bedsheet at all. The shower and toilet are dirty. The windows are broken and it was not safe. We did not go to the kitchen because we decided to find another place to stay. All the photos that they put in the site are apposite from what we saw. We were really upset and the accommodation cost was over our budget because we have to find another place. They dont want refund our money and ask us to talk to their bos. We have no choice. I really hope that they will be an action from your side about this unfortunate even.

We didn’t last 30 minutes”

I had had a terrific experience as a solo traveler in a hostel in Queenstown, NZ (YHA Lakefront) the week prior, so we gave the Elephant Backpacker a shot in Sydney. When we first arrived, the lobby smelled very strongly of paint. Undeterred, we made our way through the crowd in the lobby to the reception desk to check in. Anyone can see the process of assigning room keys in the system because of how the screens are arranged (which, frankly, didn’t give me a lot of confidence in security), and we noticed that our check-out date was wrong, which was never corrected. We went up to the room (a three-person room with a bunk bed that we had made into a two-person room), and the linens were missing. This was clearly a great place for solo travelers who are looking for groups to hang out with. There were crowds everywhere in the place, including out on the sidewalk. But I didn’t find it clean, well-maintained, or comfortable. I get it: you get what you pay for. But I’ve also seen places that charge a similar amount deliver a much different experience on a budget. If you are looking for an energetic, lively, youth-oriented place to stay and aren’t as worried about things like cleanliness and upkeep, this place could be gold. The location is great in the city, too. But we cut our losses, dropped off our key, and headed for another place.

Loud and lively reasonable for the price.”

Location.

On the whole the hostel was average. The bathrooms were small and in disrepair as was the kitchen. The wifi didn't work and the staff uninterested. When we checked in we provided our passports for staff to photocopy, I needed a copy of my passport for my IRD application so I asked if I would be able to keep it when we checked out, I was told by staff that wasn't possible because they are all used for scrap paper! On the plus side it was nice to share a double bed, quite unusual in a dorm. If you are looking for a really cheap bed and a loud party atmosphere with backpacker receptionists this might be the place. Otherwise best to look elsewhere.

The twin room that I get was fine. Lift is a plus since we have lots of luggage and our room are on the 3rd floor. Shared toilet and shower room are ok but some of the door need to be fix. What a nightmare!!!”

location

Our staying in Elephant Backpacker's was a nightmare! There were 6 of us staying in a 6-person dorm on 23&24 February 2014. The hygine condition was terrible. It seems like the room was never been cleaned up for months or perhaps years! The carpet was filled with rubbish. We can find nutshells, junk food plastic bags spread out the whole room. The worst part is we were biten by the bed bugs! The bed bug bites are itchy and irritating. There are hundreds spots of reddish bite marks throughout our hands and legs. It lasts more than a week and till now we still feel uncomfortable. Besides the cleanliness problem, there was too much noise on Saturday night. People there were chatting loudly till 4am. It is definately a big NO for us to come back Elephant Backpacker. Just need to pay a little bit more, you can have a wonderful stay in other backpackers places.
