Bungalows in beautiful setting with great service”

rooms, beds, service

We were traveling during NYE and had a hard time finding accommodations to pre-book in Chaungtha Beach. Then we saw that one bungalow was still available at Hill Garden Hotel and booked it even though we could find few reviews. I wanted to write this review because we were amazed at what we got for the price. The hotel is relatively new and fairly small with only 9 bungalows at the property. It is located about 1.5km north of the main road in Chaungtha Beach past the sister Shwe Hin Tha hotel (owned by Belgians). So the only downside is that you need a bike to get to/from the main strip in town with all the restaurants (or the staff can arrange motorbike rides down to the sister hotel on the main road for 500 kyat each way). But it is totally worth it to stay here regardless as the setting is beautiful with all bungalows overlooking gardens and banana trees with a view of the beach and town in the distance. We stayed in bungalow #9. It was brand new with all new beautiful wood furnishings and a huge brand new beautiful bathroom inside as well as an outdoor patio with seating. We had a huge comfortable king-size bed with a pretty net and the staff added a couple mattresses and another net next to it to accommodate the 3 of us. The included breakfast was one of the best we had for accommodations in this price range in Myanmar. Besides your typical eggs, you actually get an option of a banana pancake. There is always some good fruit and snacks as well. The staff couldn't be more helpful. They are always available and happy to help with any need. You can also book trips and bus tickets through them for very good rates. And you can use free WiFi at the sister hotel down the road. The only downside I can think of is the quality of the bikes they have for rent. Considering the fact that you actually need them to get around when staying here, I hope they will upgrade to newer better-maintained bikes to several speeds and baskets for convenience of the gu

Happy to stay at Hill Garden”

Friendly staff, lovely bungalows, nice breakefast

Hill Garden was a nice surprise in out stay at Chaungtha Beach. While rest of the village is not so lovely, the resort on the hill at the north was very nice. Great staff, specialy their friendly lady boss. Wooden bungalows are more than great, their condition is worth their money. There is also a fresh tea every morning at our veranda and tasty berakefast at the restavrant, where you can choose in 4 different coices every morning. Well you have to walk a little to the beach, but its ok. We want to come back one day.

This was, by far, the best hotel we stayed in”

the location (it is a mile away from the dirty end of Chaung tha), the staff, the rooms

Fantastic in every way. The staff are amazing, the surroundings and gardens are lovely, they have a 'green' policy, the food is delicious, the rooms delightful, each with its own balcony. A real pleasure and delight to have found this place. Chaungtha beach itself is noisy and not nice, the Hill Garden is a mile north, and the beach here, just 2 minutes away, is spotless and unspoiled.

very relaxing, quiet bungalow ”

quiet, short distance to empty beach and to dining at Chaungtha beach, friendly staff

This small bungalow resort is so nice that I extended my stay there. The bungalows are spacious, clean, quite new, very quiet. The resort is located in a nice green garden with banana trees and other tropical plants approx. 2 km from the Chaungtha Beach with its hotels, resorts and "nightlife" and 3 minutes walk to the beautiful, empty white beach stretching many km to the north. I really can recommend the Hotel restaurant, same as the daily served breakfast, where you have got the choice of several, even Mohinga, the traditional burmese soup. I really enjoyed my relaxing stay there.

Lovely Garden Oasis ”

Beautiful gardens, near to beach/nature trails, good/safe food

Hill Garden Resort - hillside bungalow. First up - OK its not on the beach and indeed way out of town (not a bad thing) but lush, beautifully landscaped and environmentally conscious garden cabins – idyllic! Except …. Electricity only available 6pm to 6am (unreliable) and then pot luck during the day. Wifi at odd hours via phone tether but it worked ‘sometimes’. Value for money – certainly and beach was a short 3 min walk down a dusty hill but the beach here is far better than the main beach which is Myanmar’s answer to Brighton! One more serious complaint is the encouragement to pay bar/food bills upon check out – while this makes things easier it deprives the service staff of tips and I am pretty sure my food bill of 104Ks ($108) for 3 days was inflated – strongly recommend paying as you go. The food was excellent and the staff as charming and helpful as you could wish for. WARNING- Be VERY careful where you eat in this region – the lack of reliable electricity means food storage is a problem as is basic hygiene! This is no idle warning, both visiting locals and foreigners are often victims of food poisoning and I was no exception.

Relaxing to the max”

Quiet location, nice staff, close to beach

The hill garden hotel is located about a 15 minute walk from town but it is quiet and close to a lovely beach which allows for much relaxation. My only two issues were that the restaurant menu is very small and there are no fans or ac in the rooms so it some nights we were very much kept awake by the heat.

Amazing place and incredibly lovely staff”

Big cofy bed, lovely nets, beautiful sunset from the balcony with oblique sunset views, nice cycle to beach and such amazing, friendly and smiey staff

things didn't get to the best of starts as they didn't have my booking. luckily i had called ahead as i was arriving early so my advice to you is to call and double the check the booking after booking online. myanmar is still catching up and the internet is not the most stable means of booking. but they dealt with it incredibly well with the manager wanting to speak to me to apologise over the phone and then in person when he arrived. they put me up in their sister hotel at no extra expense and then arranged for my luggage to be taken to the hill garden when my bungalow was ready. i was ill for 2 days and they made me some soup that could only have been magical as it made me feel so much better! great place. wouldn't hesitate to come back in the future, some building work but it's to be expected in myanmar.

Relaxed athmosphere and super friendly people”

Staff, Design, Nature

We really enjoyed our stay at Hill Garden. The bungalow area is really nice, feels like living in a jungle. The staff, especially the friendly Phw Phw, who really speaks an excellent English, made our stay very enjoyable. The bungalows have a very nice design, are spacious and have very comfortable beds. The only thing we would suggest to improve is to upgrade the breakfast. Since there are 99% European tourists the breakfast could be more Western oriented.

Lovely garden surrounded hotel just 5 mins from...”

Friendly helpful staff, tour help, transportation assistance, great food, huts like new -very nice...

Was my first stop in Myanmar and I think I may be spoiled for the rest of my travels! Its a short 5 min, beautiful bike ride (bikes are available for about $2 a day at the hotel) along the ocean to arrive at the main beach. The sister hotel is located at the main beach and you are welcome to use the Free Wifi there. Your price includes a very good breakfast - you're given the fruit of the day, treat of the day (local sweet, very good so you should try them all), coffee or tea, your choice of eggs and toast, selection of pancakes or for a day notice you can enjoy a Myanmar traditional dish (listed on the menu, I cannot rem how to spell it), which I recommend, its delicious. There is a man that works between the two hotels relentlessly to ensure you are taken care of each day of your stay. He arranges transportation, trips, tours, extensions - you name it, he's fantastic! The only downside to this hotel for me was how long it took to get hot water to my hut. Depending on where yours is located it can take upwards of 15 mins plus. Though cool showers are quite normal in Asia and often welcomed after a very hot day of travel, so not the end of the world in my opinion.

Quiet non developed tourism”

Staff. Quiet location. Good beach

The hotel has individual bungalows about 5 minutes walk from a non tourist developed beach. There is only electricity from 18.00 to 06.00 and no wifi. The gardens are lush and well cared for and the hotel food is good and well priced. As long as you don't want a beach party atmosphere this is th epmace foe you. Loved it but it is a long drive or bus ride from yangon.

Beautiful hotel close to a quiet beach ”

A good stay here. Beautiful hotel grounds. Can be a lot of mosquitoes but staff spray the room and will give you a coil if you sit on your veranda in the evening. Power only at night, but that was not much of a problem, especially as it was cool season. A nice mostly empty beach close by and yet only about 20 mins walk to the main Chaungtha beach if you want to go and see the vibrant local beach scene. Breakfast was fine. However other food options not so great, so it may be a bit difficult/limited if you do not have transport at night time. You can hire motorbikes from here, and the hotel also provide a free Tuk Tuk to pick you up/drop you off at the bus stop. - Check with the hotel or ask on the bus where to get dropped off as you need to get off before the main bus station.

a little piece of paradise”

the location, the breakfasts, the cottages

My friend and I had a wonderful 4 night stay at the hotel. The cottage type rooms with varandahs were spacious and well thought out.The cottages are set within a garden of terraced tropical plants, trees and banana plants. It can't really be seen from the road, unlike most of the new development in this beach location. The hot water worked. The wi fi didn't work for me but worked for most other people. Free pick up from the bus station was a definite plus. If it wasn't such a long way from england I would consider going back on a regular basis.

Great Hotel if you understand what you're getting”

Beautiful quiet setting

These are new bamboo bungalows which are in a quiet garden on a hilltop. There are some views of the beach and ocean but they are mostly blocked by trees. It is not far from a mostly deserted beach but the main beach where everyone goes is a 5 minute motorcycle taxi ride or 15 minute bike ride. If you want to be right on the beach this isn't the place for you. While it was quiet for our 3 days there I could see where a groups of noisy guests would be a problem as the bungalow walls are just bamboo mats and not sound proof at all. Another issue is the mosquitoes, the windows have no screens so they are free to come in. The bed has mosquito netting. We didn'thave much issue with them really although I think we got bit a few times. One other thing I found annoying is they turn the power off as soon as the sun comes up and don't turn it back on until the sun goes down. The only thing you can use power for is lights and anything you plug in, there is no air con or fans. The lighting in the bathroom is through the windows is poor so some lights there would help. Why they turn it off I have no idea. Overall this is a good place especially if you want to be away from everyone.

The hotel is a 3 minute walk from a deserted stretch of beach with some lovely food/drinks stalls! We spent every day there drinking coconuts and swimming in the sea. The breakfast is fantastic with plenty to choose from. The staff are mainly all lovely and kindly let us check in at 5am when we arrived off a night bus. Very good value for Myanmar (where the hotel prices are higher than in other classic asian traveller countries). The staff is very friendly and helpful - my wife became sick during our stay - the staff (the owner, manager and others) took care of her and brought us in the middle of the night to a doctor, so that we could enjoy the rest of our stay there. The cook does understand his job very well, but is also openminded for all sort of conversation. We would like to stay longer...
