Amazing Experience!”

Service, Dining, and ONSEN!! Unbelievably friendly service! They did all they could to accommodate our late arrival. Lots of humor and smiles. Great guidance for us two awestruck ladies.

Our stay was phenomenal. We had been traveling hard through Japan & were ready for a restful night at Fukinomori. Sadly, we had delays & took the wrong train which dropped us 40 mins past our destination & had to backtrack! Agoda was fantastic & contacted the hotel to notify them of our delay /late arrival. They were great about it & were actually worried for us! When we drove up in the cab, we immediately agreed we'd have to book a second night there for the full experience. We wanted to relax! We are so glad we did!! Breakfasts and dinner (12 courses!) were out of this world incredible! I couldn't have dreamed for a better experience. Loved the hotel grounds & amenities, and the outdoor onsen was so remarkable it almost brought me to tears. I felt such a peace up there. Fantastic guidance & shuttle to the Magome-Tsumago trail hike. That alone was a ridiculously wonderful experience! Large traditional rooms, fantastic traditional ryokan service. Our balcony view of the sunrise was absolutely moving, I'd never seen such beauty. We hated leaving but left there relaxed and ready to take on the second leg of our trip. We were very, very pleased and honored to be so cared for here. The epitome of Japanese hospitality here, for sure.

Excellent”

First of all, the hotel is not by a train station or accessible by bus. This is a decent onsen hotel remotely located inside a mountain area. Having said that, it takes only 15-20min by car from the nearest station or Nagiso Station. When you pick up this place, I am pretty sure that you want to enjoy a quiet and peaceful place surrounded by nature. Their hospitality is nice and friendly. And you don’t need to speak Japanese to get help from them. Also, their food is super. On top of all that, I enjoyed stargazing at night and open-air private bath. You go to Nagiso probably you want to go to Magome and Tsumago. Please feel easy to do hiking between these two Edo villages. I was lucky that I had avoided rain and snow

Traditional ryokan within a modern mountain lodge”

Cleanliness, modern conveniences, beautiful setting

Traditional Japanese rooms are immaculate with modern private bathrooms and mountain view windows with screens providing fresh mountain air all night. Thin floor mattresses may be too hard for some. Meals are delicious local dishes beautifully presented. Public baths are very clean and a fun experience. Remote location is not near public transport but hotel provides shuttle service (on their schedule) between Nagiso, the nearest train station, and Tsumago, the nearest tourist destination. Staff speaks little English, but it's not a problem. We experienced a comfortable and memorable night.

Wonderful onsen and very friendly staff”

They sent a van to pick us up at the Nagiso train station. Staff was very nice and friendly, and the host spoke great English. They had tea and coffee set up for us in a fireside lounge. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and served in the traditional manner. The traditional Japanese room was nice and cozy. There were four onsen, two inside and two outside. The two outside had fantastic views in nice settings. Overall this place was very nice and considering the price, you really must go if you have a chance!

Idyllic Woodland Hotel”

This was my first time in the Kisu valley and having tried to get a Ryokan in Magome and failed, I "settled" on the Fukinomori. Boy, did that work out! Staff were great, the atmosphere and facilities authentic and the food was spectacular - make sure you book dinner ahead of time as there are no local alternatives. You won't be disappointed. Our one disappointment was staying only one night. It was way too short...

Superb Food, beautiful wooden outdoor onsen, very friendly staff

We stayed at this hotel for two nights. The food was superb and the hotel facilities are really nice, in particular the wooden outdoor onsen. There is a free shuttle to and from Nagiso station as well as to the Tsumago/Magome hike. We would definitely stay here again and found that it was worth the money spent.

Very good”

The hotel was a little pricey for our budget, but it facilities was worth the occasional spurge. Hotel staff was friendly and introduced us to all the facilities of the area during check-in. Onsen was good, with both indoor and outdoor onsens. The view from our hotel room was great as well, with mountains in the backdrop. We entered the room with a table in the middle for tea/rest; the staff later helped us set up our futons/beds during dinner time, turning the room into a cosy bedroom. The hotel even has a lounge area with magazines, TV, free drinks, comfy blankets and chairs to just sit around and relax. Breakfast and dinner (dinner has to be paid and reserved separately) was delicious as well, and each meal was like a work of art of food and japanese culture. The hotel had some insects (?stink bugs), likely due to the hotel being in a very "nature" location, but they did put up signs for us to keep the windows/doors closed and even provided tape to stick the insects. Getting to the hotel was difficult. The hotel does provide shuttle services from the station/tsumago town to the hotel, however only at ~4 and 5pm. We had to take a 20 min taxi ride (~4500 yen) from nagiso station to the hotel as we reached ~1pm, and another taxi ride from the hotel to tsumago town. The hotel however did provide shuttle service from the hotel to the station during our checkout at 9am. Overall we did enjoy our stay in this hotel that was on top of a hill.

Gorgeous retreat”

Gorgeous hotel in a stunning, rural area. Ate like royalty and the onsen was brilliant. They switched over the onsen rooms everyday so you could experience both sides. The staff were very friendly and one was fantastic at English and explained all the dishes and helped organise our day trips with their hotel bus. The hotel bus is an absolute saviour and is much more ideal than spending money on a taxi as the hotel is far out from any cafes or restaurants. Would love to come back again as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Arigatou gozaimasu hotel Fuki No Mori!

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location ”

Location. Traditional style rooms. Outdoor onsen.

We had a lovely stay here - completely different to our stays in tokyo and hakone and our favourite experience living really in the middle of nowhere ! The hotel is beautiful and the staff are very kind. The onsen is excellent and the outdoor one is so lovely. Unfortunately the information regarding the private onsen for a couple was in Japanese and none of the staff told us about this until we asked if it was an option and by that point it was fully booked. As a married couple we would have expected to have been informed about this so we were dissapointed that we missed out on a romantic experience ! The food at night we thought was too expensive , we were already paying a lot of money for the hotel with breakfast only and it was another £60 for 2 people for dinner which we thought was too pricey. However the staff kindly took us to the store to buy our own food in which was very nice. But if the dinner was cheaper we would have much rather have done that. Also on the final day our train wasn't till later and a late check out or luggage storage wasn't an option , and we were dropped at the train station at 10.30 am , bearing in mind it was December and so we had to wait for 2 hours for our train in the cold station ! Aware it was our fault we couldn't get an earlier train booked however felt it was poor customer service to leave us at the train station in the winter ! However it was a lovely stay just a few areas for improvement , but all in all it was great experience that we will remember and the walk from magome - tsumago was absolutely stunning ! And we got free transport to and from the walk and train station which was great.

Amazing place, but would have appreciated more prior information”

The place is simply amazing and I would recommend it to everyone. The only things that we didn't like were that we didn't know the shuttles from and to the hotel were only in very certain hours of the day (from the hotel in the morning, to the hotel in the afternoon) and otherwise you need to get a taxi that costs 5000 yen. We also didn't know that meals were very expensive - 6000 yen for a dinner (we didn't eat it, maybe it's worth it).

Would have been a nice place to chill at night”

Went with another couple and we got the modern room while they got the Japanese one. According to them, theirs were filled with bugs that seemed to appear out of nowhere. It's pretty common in the area I think, as there were notices that came in our room on how to deal with these bugs. The room I got was okay. No bugs at all and it was spacious. Food was okay—not bad but not life-changing. Beds were comfortable. I really appreciated the common lounge and the star-gazing terrace that were in the premises. Wished the sky was not overcast while we were there... we had prepared to do some astrophotography but that fell through.

The perfect Modern Japanese experience”

1) The hotel location/view is amazing. 2) The hotel staff is very friendly and attentive. 3) The Hotel itself is incredible. It has the perfect blend of a moden hotel with a Japanese style

We had a great experience at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful in English. We loved the hotel concept as a whole where you feel you are staying at an authentic traditional Japanese hotel but have all the commodities of a modern hotel. The breakfast and dinning are quite an experience to try. We recommend this hotel.

Wonderful stay in a traditional ryokan”

The staff were wonderful, the traditional meals were a great experience and the onsens were lovely.

We had a fabulous stay at this hotel, which is more like a traditional ryokan. The staff were extremely helpful and picked us up from the train station. The traditional meals for breakfast and dinner were a great experience and the outdoor onsens were the perfect way to relax at night. Whilst the hotel is slightly further away from the town centre of Tsumago, they offer you lifts whenever you need them.

Beautiful location, friendly staff and awesome onsen!”

This ryokan is located beautifully in the kiso Valley. A convenient, but necessary, shuttle transfer is offered by the hotel. Spa facilities are excellent and outside onsen are superb in particular. The rooms, hallways and common areas are decorated with nice wooden sculptures from the region. And the smouldering fire is makes you feel right at home. Only one member of the staff spoke English (very well), while the rest made a great effort. The ryokan and it's food plan are a little pricey though. With not many restaurant options around, this may be a concern. However, we would definitely recommend this to those looking for a little authentic luxury while staying in the Tsumago area.

I would happily stay there again. The computer facilities were excellent. Supurb personal service. fabulous views Excellent but expensive food $120 A pp for traditional meal - worth the money Maps in English are a major hurdle in Japan. Each one is different from the others and don't always face north and have different names for the same thing (roads etc). But we did love Japan and would happily go back. Despite the language barrier people including the hotel staff tried to be helpful.

Great hotel, great value”

My wife and I stayed here because we wanted to get out a bit into more rural Japan. The hotel is located such that a nice day hike between Tsumago and Magume along the Nakasendo Post Road is super convenient. Also, their kai seki dinner is top notch. I do think if you stay multiple nights that I would recommend against getting it twice in a row, though. It's a pretty big meal but delicious. The staff was great, and they were very accommodating about setting us up with a taxi when we had to get to the train station before their first shuttle.

Personnel was great and attentive. The traditional (11 course!) dinner was an experience all by itself. Best food we had during our trip of 21 days through Japan. Facilities were clean, the Onsen had great views over the mountains and the shuttle service made the hotel very accicibel even though its secluded location. This place might not be cheap, but it's great value for money.

Mountain Onsen = spa-ahhhhh!”

The staff was in communication with me about our arrival, shuttle times, meals until we arrived. They always answered promptly and with clear information.

We loved being off the beaten path at this hotel. The mountains were in glorious fall color, and the onsen warm and wonderful after a day of hiking. They have indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, and after our delicious dinner, we spent time gazing at the stars from the deck built for this purpose. Thankfully the weather cooperated. We loved the traditional Japanese experience and would recommend it highly. We loved our time here and will come back someday--I hope!
