Hotel near Yangon city centre's offices, kind staff, among other benefits”

I chose Hotel Grand United Chinatown as it is located near Himalaya Airlines Yangon Branch Office. I was going to Himalaya Airlines to collect its inflight magazine. The hotel has excellent views of Yangon Chinatown and the city's famous pagoda and mosque. Complimentary breakfast tastes delicious. Please note there are no free return airport transfers to this hotel but the hotel staff are excellent. One of the staff wrote the addresses of the airlines' offices in Burmese for me and emailed to me in Singapore prior to my arrival so that I could reach the offices successfully without delays. On the day of check-out, I forgot to take my raincoat with me. Their driver brought me back to the hotel to collect my raincoat free of any further transport charge. If I ever wanted to visit the city centre's airline offices, I will stay in Hotel Grand United Chinatown absolutely.

Friendly and helpfull staff, centrally located, fast WIFI and clean rooms

We stayed three nights at Hotel Grand United Chinatown during our Yangon Shopping weekend and enjoyed it very much. The staff was very helpfull and friendly and arranged different Restaurant bookings for us. Located amidst at Chinatown with easy access to all the main sights. We booked a Superior room which was spacious and clean in the 7th floor with nice view over the surrounding area. Breakfast is served on 9th floor, good variety and well presented. The WIFI connection was quite good and very fast. So all in one, I can really recommend this hotel for your Yangon stay.

Great hotel with very attentive staff, a gem!”

    Great staff, clean rooms, rooftop

We booked this hotel last minute as we had one night in Yangon. Though this wasn't "downtown" Yangon, I'm super glad we stayed here. The staff was great - they answered any questions we had as best as possible, were able to get us taxis really quickly, and were very attentive and friendly. We got an upgrade to a corner room, and the room was fantastic for the price -- it was spacious, clean and airy, with lots of light. We stayed at rooms that were more expensive that had a worse quality throughout our trip so this was a pleasant surprise. The other good thing was that there are not a ton of rooms in the hotel, so it wasn't this giant maze of rooms where you felt lost. The hotel overall felt like this cozy oasis in an otherwise bustling city. There's also a small rooftop patio (part of the penthouse, but if it's empty or if the people in the penthouse are nice - it's a great place to just take in Yangon over a couple of beers) and a wraparound balcony on the top floor where there's breakfast daily. All in all, an awesome hotel given the staff, the price and the rooms. I would definitely recommend it!

    Great hotels for the money”

Whenever I come to Yangon, I always stay in the 21st street or Chinatown Grand United. They are pretty much the same and only 2 blocks from each other. The rooms are always comfortable and clean, the breakfast is good and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable about area, attentive and kind. This past weekend, I was lucky enough to get an incredible discount on the Penthouse Suite at the Chinatown location. It was perfect! I got an extra large room with a king sized bed, 2 big screen TVs and a wonderful private, top floor patio with a great view of both the pagoda and the river. I do not think I could have enjoyed my time there more. Great hotels for the money!

Especially Street 19 available all kind of food for travelers. We ate nice dinner at Good Evening Restaurant (19 Street) Thai Food really nice and price also very reasonable. I recommend this hotel for stay because everything is near by. This Chinatown get busy 6.00pm onward. The Staff at hotel very helpful and friendly. Hotel room is big and the room tiles really nice. Convenient location in heart of vibrant Rangoon”

Extremely helpful and friendly staff, Location, Clean

Clean, basic hotel, conveniently located in the bustle of downtown Rangoon. The hotel's location in the heart of Chinatown means you're never short of somewhere to eat - the local street food is amongst the cheapest in South East Asia and always excellent. Like all Burmese people, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Due to the government's control over hotel rates in Burma, it is overpriced for the standard, but clean, safe and well maintained. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Hotel Grand United Chinatown to other travellers keen to see the riches of this wonderful country. Tip: For gents, remember to wear long trousers instead of a shorts if visiting the Shewedagon Pagoda (no short skirts/shorts for women either), or purchase a traditional Burmese longyi (Sarong) beforehand, which a local will show you how to tie.

Has all the basics in a good central location”

Location, ability to store luggage in reception

There really are only two sights to see in Yangon - the Shwedagon Pagoda and Scott's Market - and this hotel is convenient to both. It's very basic, rooms are small, it has no "charm", but it has what you need. There's just one problem - there are three "Grand United" hotels in Yangon, and two of them are in Chinatown 2 blocks apart. I walked into the wrong one, which looks so much like the right one (in the same position on the block; has reception on the 4th floor; same layout of rooms on each floor, etc) that I was standing in front of room 805 trying to figure out why my key wouldn't work and why someone else was in "my" room. They really needs to get more creative in naming their hotels to avoid this confusion.

    staff, newness factr

Although we like this one and have been staying here since they opened, multiple stays, the Grand United has the drawback of getting a lot of street noise. If they could upgrade the windows to double or triple glazed, it would make all the difference. Otherwise, if you are first and only time in Yangon and want to be in Chinatown, and this is your budget, then go for it. Nothing better in immediate vicinity, although hotels are opening everywhere around town, including a new one nearly by the proprietors of this one. The staff, btw, and taking into account the high standards of Burmese hospitality, are outstanding in every way.

    Surprisingly pleasant”

    Wifi, dinner menu, pleasant staff

My only complaint about this hotel is that the pictures of the high rise with the sign United Grand Chinatown are visible from the hotel, perhaps an advert, but the hotel is not a high rise. It's a 5 or 6 story building on a side street in Chinatown. I saw a couple of arriving hotel guests who sighting the small hotel in the midst of a very busy Chinatown where so much commerce takes place on the sidewalks, and traffic is jammed (like many of Asia's cities) seemed very nervous. It's a very good hotel with many amenities. I would definitely stay there again.

Friendly staff, Best Value for money in Yangon, Clean room

I have been 4 times in Yangon and this was so far the best value for money hotel i had. Myanmar has become very expensive the last 3-4 years. Compared to the Hotels in Thailand those in Myanmar are very expensive. For a nice Hotel in Thailand which cost about 40USD you have to pay 150USD in Myanmar. Hotel Grand United Chinatown was an exception. For me the best i had in Yangon until now. Unfortunately far away from Shwedagon Paya and the main attractions.

    Have returned, will return”

    Clean, comfortable, breakfast spread

Yangon travelers will know that having a nice hotel at acceptable prices is a luxury in Yangon. Grand United Chinatown has just that! Room interior, beds and finishing was of high standards by Yangon's standards. They had a good spread of breakfast (again by Yangon's standards) that kept my tummy full in the day. The staff service was excellent and ready to help. Highly recommended is this newly opened Sapel Burmese Traditional Foot Spa at Chinatown's 16th Street close to Mahabandoola main road. I returned to it many times during my stay for the ambience and 5 star service standards inside the massage place. It is truly something extraordinary from Yangon's unkept and dirty streets, especially a haven compared to the busy Chinatown streets outside. I think all tourists should go try out the place, especially relaxing after a day's tour and walk around downtown Yangon.

Good small hotel downtown. Very helpfull staf. Room with amizing view”

This was a good stay at Grand United Chinatown hotel. Staff is very helpful, location is good. I had the penthouse room, on the top floor of the hotel, with a big private terrasse and amazing view on Yangon and Shwedagong Pagoda. Room is quite big, clean, with a separate seating area. Bathroom is a little bit small, but still OK. Only problem of the room is that it is noisy in the morning when trafic Jam starts, around 7h30. The breakfeast was very good, event if the restaurant is a little bit small.

Great hotel and value for money”

Location, Room Cleanliness, Price/Value for Money

Really great hotel. I come to Yangon often and this was definitely value for money. Hard to find something at this price in downtown that is not run down The room is small but very simple and clean. Wasnt run down at all. The hot water was very good. No complaints. There was good selection at breakfast and the staff were very efficient and helpful. From when we entered the hotel to our room was only 5 minutes. Very good.

    Better than expected”

    Location, friendly staff, comfortable

Having read all the negative reports on hotel in Yangon, I was pleasantly surprised with the Hotel Grand United Chinatown. The entrance is not particularly impressive, but the staff were attentive and quickly brought me to the reception on the 4th floor and then onto my room on the 7th floor. Although the room was smaller than some other rooms I have stayed in, it was better than I had expected. TV, fridge, kettle, good air-con, room safe and free wi-fi which all worked well. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was also better than expected with a mixture of Asian and Western foods both hot and cold and if anything ran out, a quick mention of this to the staff brought more. Staff were friendly and helpful, all in all a pleasant experience staying in the hotel!

    Great room, exceptional service”

The balcony off our room, the view from the room, the above-and-beyond service

The hotel is in the heart of Chinatown and as-such in a vibrant neighbourhood, with lots going on and walking distance to several sites. We stayed in the penthouse suite, which has a wonderful balcony with a great view of the Sula and Shwe Dagon pagodas. There is a fair bit of street noise through the night, but I don't think you can get away from that in Yangon. The day we checked out, I fell ill. Our room was booked for the night so we could not stay in it. But when I was feeling quite bad in the afternoon and we had a plane to catch that night, they provided me a room to rest in at no cost. I was so grateful! Great service!!

    Pleasant stay with service-oriented staff”

Good service, cleanliness of the room and decent breakfast fare

We had a rather pleasant 3 nights stay at this hotel. The location is great, near to attractions like Sule Pagoda and a short cab-ride away from Shwedagon Pagoda/Bogyoke market. While many do comment that the hotels in Yangon are rather over-priced (which is true!), but the standard of service here is superb. The room was clean, staff were attentive to our calls and any requests were attended to promptly. Another point was that the wifi here was strong and stable. The breakfast spread was decent.

    Great Location / Greater Staff”

    Location / Comfort / Staff

As a solo traveler this was a bit out of my price range (but where isn't in Yangon), however I felt the extra money I spent was fully justified. I arrived at 7am and although check in time was 2pm and the hotel was full, they managed to get me into a room at 9.30am for no extra cost. And I spent the two hours waiting in the 'restaurant' on the top floor gorging myself on endless supplies of crispy bacon and baked beans. Staff were great, wanted to watch a specific football game so they changed the channel so I could watch it in my room. Location also great Soi 19 in the evening is a cool place to be to meet people and try local food, 3 minute walk max.

    Moved ! ”

When we arived we were told that they had overbooked due to renovations which I must admit made us nervous and dissapionted at first . After appoligess from staff we were told we would be going to the sister hotel a couple of streets away about 2 min walk. Staff then took us to the Grand United and we were offerd breakfast while they cleaned our room as it was early morning . The hotel was in a good location within walking distance to everthing you could need and the staff were very helpful with everthing and spoke good english . The breakfast was fantastic and I am not sure who does the cooking but the Fish dish and the Hot and Sour chicken are fantastic. There was a good virety each day and diffrent choices each day . Would deffently stay again and recomend this hotel .

    Clean and centrally located ”

    Clean, efficient and ideal location

I stayed at this hotel from 3/3/ to 6/3/2014. I chose it because it is located smack at the Chinatown, Yangon downtown. It is surprising clean and the staff are very helpful and efficient. Would definitely come back to this hotel on my next trip.
