Fantastic”
Hotobil Guest House is one of the best accommodation we have been in Japan. The owner is very pleasant and nice. She offered us a wonderful dinner when we arrived (tempura, chicken, gyozas...) The next day, the owner's son took us to the station with his car. The big room, where we slept, is beautiful, very spacious and bright. It is a special place very well located, in the traditional neighborhood of Nara and 20 minutes walk from the famous park. We would like to come back :) Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Like staying at your Mom's! Will be back again!”
My husband and I stayed here for two nights. I was 32w pregnant so we chose the family-runned Japanese Ryokan. We couldn't be better taken care of! The hostess is very warm, more like your family member. The room was large enough, and you should not miss a single meal here! The hostess is a very good cook herself, and the food including bread, soup, fish and desert were all made by herself. You will be touched to watch her preparing your meals and than be amazed when you taste them. Hotobil is relatively more into local people's residential area than in the attraction area, but you can always take a city loop bus nearby, or like us, walk to the temples-- Nara is a very small city after all. You can also try a public hot spring bath which is just a few minutes walk from Hotobil, to experience local people's lifestyle. We have decided to stay here again with our two kids in the future. They will certainly love Nara dears, the free environment in Hotobil, the great food and of course the lovely dog!

Quiet friendly guest house”
As previous reviews mentioned, it is a little hard to find, but I found natives of Nara more helpful even than the rest of Japan & a woman walked me to the door. Nara is an amazing laid back city. Mieko is very friendly and helpful. She puts a lot of effort into making the experience of staying at Hotobil enjoyable. Her breakfasts are beautifully prepared & delicious. She took the time to tell me a lot about the food as well as history & culture of Nara & local area.

Delicious breakfast in a quiet neighborhood.”
I have to say that my night here was my restful night during my whole Japan trip. Note that I stayed in hostel, capsule hotel, Airbnb, and hotel. I paid extra for their classic Japanese dinner, which was delicious and very filling. There was a public bath near the guest house (note to bring towel and toiletries when you go to the public bath). Good dinner, hot bath, and quiet neighborhood, made for a great night rest. The breakfast next day (included in the cost) was a great way to start my day too. A couple things to note. The stairs are a bit steep, so bringing up heavy luggage will be a bit of a challenge. The guest house is about 20 minutes walk from the Kintetsu Nara station. Kyobate station (on JR line) is a short walk and goes to the Nara station, but the station isn't busy and the train didn't seem to come often.

Lovely stay and great host”
This is a perfect accomodation for a couple or a small group of traveller who is looking to get away from the crowd and really sink in the beauty of Nara. Free parking is provided next to the vegetable garden and the house is only about 20 minutes walk from the famous Nara park. The landlady was very friendly and welcoming. Small little touches that separates this house from your common hotel. Our room was very clean and presentable complete with tatami floor and japanese decorations. We were greeted by the resident dog and finished our stay with a lovely home cooked breakfast by the landlady herself. I will definitely come back if I visit Nara again. Recommended!!!

A MUST stay. An attraction in itself.”
I chose this accommodation despite it being slightly further away from the central tourist area based on other reviews of the food provided by the owner. I looked forward to trying the food out and I can safely say the food lived up to its reviews AND MORE. Nothing beats experiencing it for yourself. The owner is a very pleasant lady who makes you feel welcomed right from the start till you say goodbye. And I felt so sorry to leave, wish I had booked more nights in Nara. For those who are concerned that it is less central in location, I can say it's not a problem. Taking a stroll through the quiet neighbourhood in this little town is nice and you pass by many interesting little shops along the way that other tourists may not discover. The accommodation is close to a JR train station so getting there is easy enough. The residents are friendly and helped me to find this place with great enthusiasm. A print out of Google maps will suffice too. This is hands down, one of the most memorable places to stay while travelling.

Great hostess”
The hotel is great, as many other reviewers have mentioned. The lady who owns the house and rents two rooms on the second floor is amazing. Very friendly, accommodating, helpful, etc. The home made breakfast in the morning was very tasty and she obviously didn't spare any resources or time. The main drawback for me was the price - way too expensive for a room in someone's house, with a shared bathroom, and with nothing fancy inside the room - it was basically empty room. Also, it is quite far from the social and cultural center in Nara.

Awesome experience!”
Navigating to the location took some effort, in fact if not for the Trip advisor sticker and the owner's late dog picture on the door we would have missed it. There are only 2 rooms available in the guest house and we got the one facing the quiet street (the other faces the guest house garden). It's a actual Japanese house so space is limited. Everything is clean and neat. The owner is the sole worker here, she cooks an awesome Japanese dinner (must try), breakfast (also very good quality ), cleans and manages the front desk. She speaks some English and is very friendly with guest. Overall a very good experience stay in a Japanese guest house. Must try to believe!

We can only recommend you to stay here for a night! ”
We loved staying at this traditional Ryokan. The host was incredibly friendly. We were welcomed by her with an icy refreshment while she explained us what to do in Nara. We wanted to eat dinner outside but when it suddenly started to rain, the host had no problem with preparing dinner for us at home (which was incredibly good!) We had the bigger of both rooms where we slept on comfy futons. The next day the host prepared an original Japanese breakfast for us. We highly recommend you this awesome Ryokan where you'll enjoy the even better service from a lovely host!

Best living experience ever in Japan”
I enjoyed the traditional Japanese room very much, big and quiet, just like what I see in Japanese TV series. The house lady is welcome. Pretty nice breakfast!!! Next time I go to Nara I will choose this hotel again, and enjoy both dinner and breakfast.

Warm host in a beautiful Japanese home”
Would recommend this place to my friends. We were greeted with shaved ice when we arrived on a hot afternoon. The breakfast spread was a luxurious European style. The room was well appointed and spacious even for three pax. The guesthouse is in a residential area but extremely convenient to transport and downtown Nara. Would stay here again.

Lovely home stay in beautiful Nara”
This is a home stay run by a lovely old lady in Nara. Located not too far from the JR station, this place is situated in the quiet back streets of Nara. The room was comfortable and the lady cooked us a fantastic Japanese breakfast in the morning. An enjoyable stay.

Home mon's cooking is excellent, breakfast are so beautiful and delicious, also can ask for lunch or dinner (with extra charge). Clean and quiet room, slept so well for 2nights while we stayed there. An impressive hotel worthy of revisiting”
An unique experience of living in a traditional Japanese-style house. The host lady is considerate and especially good at cooking. The location is not very near the city center but you can easily get there by the convinent bus system or just by walk. By the way, the hotel is very close to a Kimoto rental shop and the host can help to make a reservation for you. I also recommend the Japanese-sytle bathing room nearby. I do enjoy walking along the quiet path every night after taking a relaxing bath. In fact, it is one of the best moments for me in Japan.

feel like home”
The host lady was super kind and very helpful. We ordered a proper dinner in Japanese style and her cooking is terrific - food very tasty, with all dishes beautifully set. The bedding is soft and comfortable, and the facilities are all clean and well maintained, overall a very good chocie for family trip. A bit inconvenient for elder guests though because the room is located on 2nd floor with traditional tatami bed. My father had some troubles climbing the stairs and getting up from the bed beause of his hip pain, but that's our own problem.

Homestay feel!”
Friendly host who loves to cook, good breakfast spread. Few minutes walk to Tanaka cho N13, a city loop bus, which leads to JR Nara station, Kintetsu Nara station, Deer park, Todaiji & most sightseeing places. Remember to get Nara 1 day free bus pass from Nara Line House or JR Nara station. Will visit again when in Nara.

Reasonable Price with good location for Bagpackers”
Staffs' good service impress me a lot, they were always ready to help or give good advice for travelling around. But maybe it's typical Japanese wooden building is over 100 years, I did feel wet and a smell for the sleeping bunk. Price is very reasonable compared to Kyoto's high level of consumption, which makes it very convenient to bagpackers.

Wonderful ryokan experience”
Probably the best accommodation we had in Japan. Reasonably priced, with a great breakfast and the host was absolutely adorable.
