Exceptional”
This place is beautiful on the inside and looks quite new. The rooms and corridors and the restaurant and coffee bar etc were very comfortable and looked great. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is excellent and the coffee is even better! They offer a shuttle bus to the snow monkey park, some onsen and the train station too.

Home like feel and exceptional staff”
First time staying at a Ryokan and we absolutely enjoyed it. The staff was so friendly. They made it such a nice experience. The place is very rustic being built in 1928. The owner who remodeled the place brought ins some fun while maintaining the rustic charm. The restaurant was great. Again very home like. The food was excellent as well.

Loved it!”
The lady on reception (can’t spell her name but think it’s sachito) was soooo lovely. We loved the rooms and the complimentary onsens and shuttles. Food was delicious. Only very tiny negative is that some parts of the building weren’t heated, like the toilets and showers although rooms were warm. We would definitely recommend this place, we loved it! Only an hours walk to the monkeys also.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff”
This place was pretty awesome. Very friendly staff who helps you with everything. They even bring you to the snow monkey park for free. I really enjoyed the talks and beers at their bar. It felt family like business with great people. Best place that I’ve been so far.

Cosy traditional inn near monkey baths with value option”
Chose 3-man dorm room they offered, was clean and comfy. Kotatsu at offer in the eating area, wonderful for a traditional ryokan (and as such quite cold) and the breakfast is alright for the price. Location is near monkey baths but access may be hard without a car.

A kind of best hostel I have ever been. House itself is very old but very traditional in other words. Convenient to try hot springs nearby. Must try.

Great and fair priced Ryokan”
We booked this place pretty last min but the hosts were still warm and ready to receive us. Based on the schedule, they can take you to the various onsens and monkey trail / park. Food and coffee around Shibu Onsen isn’t great but their restaurant and cafe more than make up for that. All the staff speak good English too which is a huge plus point.

Great stay near shibu onsen bus stop”
They provide a shuttle from yudanaka station at a certain timing in the afternoon. Do check with them depending on your schedule. We did not utilise this as we were not aware of it and also, we arrived in the morning. The staff is friendly and helpful as well.

A Hipster Style Ryokan? Loved it!”
Koishiya Ryokan is wedged onto the main street, filled with staid and more traditional onsen, as well as attending ryokan. But once you turn the corner to the entrance, the atmosphere is immediately and noticeably different. The walls are well lit, and covered in art and drawings, while the decoration is steeped in the salvage wood appearance that is popular in hipster locales in Southern California and Brooklyn. Also, coffee snobs - marvel at the espresso bar - a gorgeous centerpiece promising flavorful coffee in a part of the country that is desperately short on the stuff. I checked in using Japanese but the staff uses easily understandable English, and are quick and helpful to explain how the ryokan works in an onsen town. That part was a little new to me. Gentlemen stay on the third floor, where I found my room prepped and ready. It's a traditional Japanese style room with an altar, sliding doors, but with modern comforts like an air conditioner (thank the relevant deities.)

Amazing Hospitality”
For the price that you pay, Koishiya is an amazing stay. The staff are amazingly helpful, speak great English, and go out of their way to really make your trip a fantastic one to remember, which was really appreciated! They even helped us with our trip planning and shuttled us to the Monkey Park and train station when they normally don't do it because we were running super super tight on time! (Pls don't expect them to do it normally - that really was an exceptional case). They don't have an onsen but they do bring you to a really nice one as part of the room package. For the price you pay, it is totally worth it (no you don't get access to the 9 different onsens in Shiga-Kogen unlike if you stayed at other places, but the other places are also about three times the price of Koishiya so tradeoff ya? I think it's really worth it). As mentioned, because of the rates that you pay, there aren't the usual niceties that you would expect of staying in a Japanese inn e.g. no welcome tea set. Again a trade off we willingly accepted because the room itself was really spacious and nice and they had a great heater in the room. There's a kotatsu in the lounge in the main area of the hostel so if you wanted to, you could kotatsu while eating dinner. Free hot water and water can be taken from the restaurant/dining area near the lobby. Oh, like a lot of inns, there are no escalators / lifts and the stairs are pretty narrow so just be careful bringing your luggage up and down the stairs. Bathrooms are shared (again no problem cos they are so clean). We loved loved loved our stay with Koishiya and would not hesitate to recommend this place to our friends!

Excellent and Helpful Staff ”
We really enjoyed staying at Koishiya Ryokan. It was really traditional Japanese ryokan. I love the atmosphere and environment around the hotel. The staff was generally speaking English. We got the offer for hot spring and snow monkey. Unfortunately, we were there a bit late and it was raining but lucky us that we can see snowing at the night. In the morning before we went to see Snow Monkey. The hotel had the breakfast for the customer as well. If you already paid for breakfast which is fine. If you don't you need to pay an extra. After we finished breakfast then the staff took us to Snow monkey for free. But you need to pay for the entry. Highly Recommended!!

Exceeded our expectations! ”
Location is comfortably nestled in the Shibu Onsen village. Surrounded by several small local temples, bridges over raging streams with majestic views of snow capped mountains in the distance. Shuttle services to Yudanaka Station and Snow Monkey Park (Jigodukani) are much appreciated. Many options for free Onsens (not part of the 9 Shibu Onsens), including an amazing looking open air bath (rotenburo); 500 yen for 50 mins. Sadly I missed out on the open air bath under the stars, scheduling is tight. Be sure to let them know immediately if you have plans to use these. Our group of three dined in for lunch. It was delicious. I would recommend trying something off the menu only for the interesting dishes prepared with local ingredients. It is western themed with a Japanese local twist. However, I would say the menu is a tad bit overpriced for the portion sizes on certain items. Example: a plate of fries and a plate of rice, generous portions, worth the price. The salmon dish and especially the pizza, way overpriced for barely personal sized portions. If cost isn't an issue for you, I'd recommend anything on the menu; fresh and delicious. Room was for 4, felt like it could fit 10. Very comfortable and heated; although I kept the heat off, I prefer to sleep in the cold. We visited December 29th to the 30th and the weather outside was roughly -1°C in the evening and 8°C during the day; summertime for us Canadians. Room was also very clean. Washrooms were conveniently located on each floor, so even though no washroom was in the suite, it felt as if we did indeed have our own personal washroom. Showers on the other are shared, two stalls available at a time, with privacy curtains for those seeking a comfortable private shower. Staff was where the place really shined. They were accommodating, polite, considerate and helpful with arrangements and recommendations (Soba noodle restaurants, onsens, times and directions, etc). I couldn't say enough good things about th

Wonderful, friendly Ryokan! ”
This was one of our favorite Ryokan stays in Japan, a lovely place with incredibly friendly staff, a delicious restaurant, a cozy vibe and great service. The staff went out of their way to always be helpful. Each evening felt like coming home. The location is excellent, right on the main drag of Shibu Onsen public bath area, with tons of little shops and cafes nearlby, and easy access to local buses. The staff are a wealth of information on everything to see and do in the area. You can tell they truly enjoy working there and aren’t just typical employees. Would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the Nagano area!

Very nice Ryokan in Shibu that won't break your wallet”
Very helpful and friendly staffs. Great service. Although the Ryokan does not have indoor onsen, they provide car service to take you to one of the best onsen in town for free! The staff were also very helpful to suggest places to visit and food to eat. They also have a very nice cafe inside the Ryokan. The driver was very kind and provided car service to take us to see snow monkey, pick us up and drop us off at the train station. Overall a very pleasant experience! Highly recommended.

Beautiful cheap stay”
Good cheap structure to visit Monkey park. Not all the facilities of a standard ryokan are present, but the room and the shared bathroom were confortable, and above all the staff is very helpful and kind. The Yoroduya onsen is simply great, and it is amazing to can enjoy it freely once a day. Also the possibility to access to the near public bathroom is confortable. Instead, the private onsen had a too hot water (not possible to enter). Another aspect to improve is the breakfast: 500¥ for a small croissant, a yogurt and a cappuccino are quite much.
