Peaceful ryokan in Kyoto”
Yachiyo is a beautiful ryokan in Kyoto. It’s away from the busy parts (about 15min walking) so it feels like a peaceful escape. It’s very close to a few temples and you can easily get to the philosopher’s walk to Gingaku-ji. The staff were warm and welcoming and we wish we could have stayed longer. We stayed in the traditional Japanese room with no garden view and it was lovely. We had a tea set and hot water in our room and a tv which we didn’t use. Because we arrived late, the staff had already set out our tatami mats. We used the shared bathing (onsen) twice (9:30pm and 9:00 am) and had it all to our selves. Traditional robes were provided to wear to and from the bath. Highly recommend the free soft serve in the lobby after you soak.

Everything You Could Want From a Ryokan”
This isn’t a budget ryokan, but rather it’s everything you would want from a real, historic ryokan. Beautiful, comfortable rooms, amazing garden view, always hot private onsen. A great experience.

Wonderful!”
It was a unique and special experience! The room with the garden view was worth the extra cost because it was beautiful. The food was delicious

Lovely Ryokan with private Onsen”
We stayed in room No.1 with the private onsen and tatami mat floors - as out first time in a Ryokan and since we were celebrating a birthday this room was perfect for us. Staff were friendly, facilities were great - as was the breakfast there. Strongly recommend. Only negative was price, but we booked at short notice over the holidays so prices were likely inflated due to that alone.

Exceptional”
There were some mixed reviews so I was nervous at first, but the stay was pleasant! We checked-in really late (past 10pm), and the staff that greeted us was polite. He spoke limited English, but made an effort to introduce the public bath and lounge along the way, and took the time to show us around our room. In the morning, we wanted hot water from the lounge and one of the staff approached us to help us out when she saw us looking confused. We practically had the whole public bath to ourselves around 7am. A little tip - there's a free soft serve machine in the lounge, and cold ice-cream tastes fantastic after a hot bath! Overall, I enjoyed my one night stay, but I can see why some might be disappointed with what they got. If you're expecting new looking rooms or romanticizing the "ryokan experience", the economy option is not for you! Paying more for a premium room is probably your best bet.

Modern comfort meets traditional service ”
Modern updates with traditional ryokan style; convenient location near north Higashiyama sites; spacious room with beautiful garden view and private wooden bath. Near main road but quiet enough. We didn’t try the food because we wanted to experience Kyoto nightlife so I can’t speak for the food.

The Kyoto Nanzenji Ryokan Yachiyo is the best ryokan that I have stayed in Japan.”
The location is convenience. We saw it next to the famous attraction in Kyoto. The view for the room is great and beautiful. The dinner and breakfast set is traditional and delicious. The staffs are nice and helpful. The room is clean. But one special is there are many charges for drinks and tax. So the Yachiyo is a very nice experience for us.

Beautiful Ryokan near Nanzenji Temple”
A few minutes walk to Nanzenji Temple and other spots around it but this place is more suited for couples than family. It is an old but beautiful Ryokan so its not comparable to a hotel. The place is very quiet and tranquil and not suitable for young children. We had a great New Year's Dinner at the restaurant, Japanese Style Sukiyaki and the Kobe Beef was absolutely delicious. Breakfast is average and served like a set meal so you dont get to have any choice. The highlight of the trip is exploring Nanzenji Shrine!

Excellent”
A really beautiful Ryokan at a quieter part of Kyoto. It is not near the main or central area so not easily accessible to food, but it was very peaceful and tranquil. Very nice and big rooms. The hot spring bath was great. We left an item in the room and they kept it, and when we called them back, they helped us to send it to our hotel in Osaka. Very thankful to the staff there.

Good”
This was the 3rd ryokan I’d stayed in during my trip and was by far the worst. Very old decor in serious need of a refresh. Cleaning products left everywhere in the corridors. The dining area was beautiful as was the outdoor garden. Wouldn’t recommend more than one night here

Cheap hostel with nice garden”
My expectations were high given the (mainly) high ratings given by other reviewers. However, I was sorely disappointed. The room was run down with old and mismatched furniture. My room had a private bathroom with a tub that had a piece of wood wedged on one corner to prevent it from rocking (although it still did). The sliding doors didn’t slide but wobbled. In the morning, there were piles of used sheets in the corridor and cleaning items left on the chair outside the room - giving a real messy feel to the whole place. As I had a road facing room, traffic noise could be heard throughout the night (although Kyoto is a quiet town and this is in a fairly quiet part of town, the ryokan is along a mid size road with moderate amount of traffic going by). Nothing about the place really justifies the high price charged for the room. Honestly, I’ve stayed in hostels that provided a much higher level of personalised service and guest experience compared to this.

I would have paid for the food alone!!”
We decided for a ryokan experience during our short visit in Kyoto, but the hotel and the room was very run down, there were molds on the bathroom door, the carpet smelled. The bedding smelled too much of whatever washing liquid they used. The dinner experience were ok, and understand why we have to pay extra for the food, but the room really need improvement!!

Not recommended place to bring a family”
This place is recommend for people who find ryokan, but the facility is not quite good if you bring babies

dirty and not worth the money”
I think that paying $500/night is WAY too much for this place. It should be $100-$200/night. The carpets are extremely dirty. Plus sleeping on a futon for $500/night does not make any sense to me

Awful Experience”
This establishment was extremely dishonest, rude and manipulative. We pre payed at great expense for a large room with a view - and they gave us an incredibly small dark room looking out at a wall. When we complained they claimed that our price was ‘so’ high because of the dinner charge - $700 for 2 adults and 2 kids! I’ve never been swindled in this manner - it truly was one of the worst travel experiences I have had. Truly traumatic for the whole family. Do NOT pre pay at this establishment!

Would not recommend ”
Extremely expensive for a run down ryokan. Ryokan was old and in dire need of a renovation. Bathrooms had lots of mould. Not very clean at all - spiderwebs in corners of room. Hallways were old and musty. Stains on the floor of the room. Would not recommend, unless you are happy with backpacker-like accommodation.

charming traditional ryokan”
I stayed in Kyoto Garden Ryokan Yachiyo hotel for one night and wished I had more. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff helping us replace our snickers for traditional sandals. The room was great and the atmosphere was traditional which is what should be expected in a Ryokan. i did a lot of research before my purchase and was surprised to see this reasonably priced ryokan which was of a high quality. i recommend it for any traveller!
