Matsuzakaya Honten is absolutely worth it!”

Matsuzakaya Honten blew my expectations by a mile. This ryokan/hotel is clean, traditional japanese style but with a modern twist. Best part about it is the food, saying it has great food is an understatement, food was absolutely amazing!! Breakfast and dinner were all Michelin star level. We enjoyed everything to the last grain of rice, drop of soup, lick of dessert. Tip: stay in a room with a private onsen, it's worth it! Only hiccup we had was actually getting to this place: a mistake of ours, or should I say Google Map's, we went to "Matsuzakaya Hotel" instead, lol, it's only 1km apart and has the exact identical Japanese Kanji letters. So make sure you go to the correct place: Matsuzakaya Honten.

Traditional Japanese living and hospitality at its best”

It is very convenient to reach Matsuzakaya Honten. Just take a bus from platform number 3 outside Odawara station. From where the bus drops you off, it's a 50m walk to the property gate. Under heavy rain. I was greeted warmly by the hotel staff with warm Sakura tea and towels to dry myself. Even our shoes were dried off and cleaned. There was an hour to go before our checkout time. The staff courteously guided us to the free bar with all sorts of liquor, tea, coffee and candies at disposal. The rooms are very spacious with a large bed, a nice electric kotatsu, a terrace looking into the garden, and a hot spring water tub in the open. Beware of spiders and insects though, we had some really big ones in the bath and toilet. The kaiseki dinner and 8-course breakfast was an amazing experience. Lastly, at the checkout, the staff bid us goodbye right until the ryokan gate which I felt very sincere and heartwarming. Felt like at home.

Amazing experience at Matsuzakaya Honten. From the welcome to the check out just best of attends. Felt overwhelmed by the installations, service of all staff and beauty of the ryokan. Amazing meals. Would repeat or recommend without hesitation. Thank you all for the experience. Just a point to improve, the wifi was really bad, though they provide a free smartphone in your room for you to use.

In love with this place!”

This place is very beautiful and although expensive, overall it was an amazing stay. The architecture is stunningly japanese, private open air bath in our room was great. I picked the ' Luxury Japanese Western Style Room with Open-Air Bath' room type. Beds are wide and comfortable, duplex apartment style. The full course kaiseki meals were delicious, with very attentive service throughout the whole stay. Great location in Hakone, free parking at the hotel, easy to get everywhere by car. The private family onsens (reservable at the reception) is seriously gorgeous and I would definitely recommend anyone to book a slot, regardless of whether they have their own private open air bath in their rooms or not. Only thing to note is that there is a 'stuffy' scent all around the complex, probably due to the hotel's very long standing traditional history. Besides that, everything was perfect for a romantic stay.

Best place for relax”

We spent 3 days and everything was just perfect !!! All the staffs were very very nice just like we read from previous reviews. We inform the staff that we have to leave early on the last day and couldn't have breakfast, when we check-out the front desk staff gave us 2 bento sets to eat along the road. So thoughtful and considerate. Thank you for hosting our stays, it was memorable and relaxing. We surely will come again.

Onsen Heaven”

Absolutely loved our stay here, all to brief though. Room was spacious and beautifully presented, the onsen on the deck was a delight to bathe in under the stars, there was also an internal bath with doors opening onto the deck. Whilst no shower in the room we embraced the Japanese way of bathing, lots of water and mess, fun! The free bar was lovely and nice to relax in the public areas before a superb dinner, truely sublime as was the breakfast that followed. Location is pretty and overall Hakaone an excellent place to visit

Excellent onsen”

Come here if you love onsen, it has lots of Yu no Hana rich in minerals. 100% onsen! We could reserve outdoor private onsen room three times during our stay. 24hr drink lounge with Sapporo draft beer, wine, sake, juices, tea, coffee. historic old hotel although nicely renovated in parts. Wooden floors, low small doors, tunnels. Clean. Our room included a small bath which is quite nice. Highly recommend getting a room with bath because if raining the outdoor onsen has not roof. We enjoyed highly bath in our room before checking out. Food, excellent for the price but loud in the dining area. Not much privacy during dining. Location is far from public transportation. We went by car. I love the hot spring water but not the old style hotel.

Very relaxing”

A bit of a pain to get to, and expensive, but was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. The room was spacious & clean and the staff very attentive. The waters of the onsen were very pleasant, the only issues being the difficulty in cheaply getting to nearby activities (museums etc) and the bar being closed during our stay (free alcohol was still available, just the socialising opportunities with other guests were very limited). One thing that deserves special praise was the food - it was exceptional. First night was an 8 course feast, second night was a phenomenal shabu shabu (the breakfasts were also great). I would stay here again happily, despite the expense.

Unique Experience ”

We were met by a very welcoming staff member who gave us all the information we needed very pleasantly. The whole bathing experience was fun and unique, as was the room setting. We chose a private onsen room. The meals, dinner and the travelers breakfast, were fantastic - works of art, fresh and delicious, and the serving staff were lovely. Our only regret is that we didn’t have another day to stay and relax a bit longer!

Both the dinner and breakfast was sn experiance, loved it. If there is something i would comment on is that the drinks for the cost money, feelt alittle wierd considering they hade the same beer in drinks and snacks room which where free. Wonderful traditional Japanese hot spring hotel. Room was really big and clean”

High quality customer services, they can provide multiple languages. Both breakfast and dinner were really really good. Extremely poor WiFi connection. Only 2 hot tubs at public bath but with high quality of hot spring. In conclusion, this is worth for traveller ,who comes from other countries, to have traditional Japanese experience. But I will not go again because it is a little bit expensive. Btw, staffs were really really nice.
