It surprises us!”
It was a very nice experience staying at Ryokan Masuya. When we arrived there, we were greeted by a very nice man who showed us this awesome natural onsen which can fit our family. He then escorted us to our room which is another pleasant surprise. The room is neat and in good size and futon is comfortable. What makes us happy is the yukata tray, he even prepared small yukata for my 5 yo and 1 yo. A very thoughtful owner! He also gave us 4 scoops of ice cream which are perfect for Japan sunny day. The location was also great, it was just 3 mins walking distance from the bus stop (Togendai Line), and it made us easier to go to Togendai to enjoy Hakone ropeway and Lake Ashi ship experience. The owner/staff also recommend a great yakiniku restaurant which is very yummy. It's always good to have local's recommendation. Overall, my family and I are very happy and we definitely recommend this one.

Value for money ryokan with onsen!”
Ryokan Masuya is only a 3 min walk from the bus stop and it was easy to get around Hakone from this area. To get to the accommodation, take bus T for about 45min from Odawara station to Sengoku Annaijo Mae stop. All the stops were announced and showed on the buses and finding the stop to get off was easy. There was a perpetual fuel smell about this place but we gradually got used to the smell during our stay here. The host could not really speak english, but understood all that we asked about during our stay here. We were impressed by the hospitality of the host during our stay here, we had fruits prepared for us everyday and he let us know whenever the onsen bath was available for our private use. We had a great experience with the onsen, exploring the area, as well as the wearing the yukata! I would definitely choose this place again if I have the chance to visit again.

Definitely worth a second visit and more! Highly recommended!”
From first glance, the building may not seem like your typical fanciful ryokans. But the moment when one steps inside the ryokan, one is immediately greeted with warmth from the ryokan's owner. Indeed, my stay at this ryokan has been made memorable and super enjoyable, all thanks to the owner's exceptional hospitality. His English may not be good but don't let that obstruct you from his kindness and generosity. In fact, we were hit with Japan's first November snow in 54 years on the day that we were due to check out. Furthermore, all bus services within Hakone were stopped due to the sudden snow. Luckily, the owner was kind enough to offer us our current room and even gave us a discounted rate to tide the day over. On top of that, he also gave us free breakfast sets for the extra day that we had to stay over. What's more can I say? This ryokan is a definite must for all those who wish to visit Hakone and of course, its onsen is top-notch too! I am going to return to this place when I save up enough money to visit Japan!

Value for money”
I was looking for budget type of accomodation within Hakone area (>$200 USD) and there are not many options. I am glad to find Ryokan Masuya that suits my budget. Location: It is reasonable close to the Ropeway and Pirate ship port (~20mins by bus) but more than 1 hour from Odawara station where Shinkansen connects to main city like Tokyo/Kyoto. Accomodation: it is dated with basic facility but we only need a place where we can rest/brush. The owner is very friendly and allow our family to occupy an onsite onsen for private bath. Tips: be aware of the bus stop operates at 5pm for most of the stops except Odawara/Yumoto. You can only take cab from Gora after 5pm for example.

lovely ryokan for cheap ”
this was a steal - classic ryokan rooms that were immaculately in design + uber clean (as per most accommodations in japan) but at a fraction of the prices in central hakone yumoto. private (indoor) hot bath was a bonus, In the district of senghoku, with easy access to 3-4 buses that run to the lake, yumoto / odawara etc. best part was the owner who speaks little English but extremely attentive / helpful - we get by through the most basic of English and hand rgestures. only downside: I went during winter and found the rooms wayy cold w mild heating, so dress warmly!

Sweet little place”
We loved our stay at the Ryokan Masuya. The owner was so sweet, and although his English was limited, he helped us enjoy our stay. We reserved the onsen for our own private use, which was nice. The water is very hot so my boys couldn't stay in very long, but I did and it was marvelous for my skin. The breakfast was really delicious and we appreciated the yukata. the jackets, and the thermos of hot water left in our rooms for our green tea. We had a lovely time.

Great Ryokan experience on the cheap”
If you want to experience staying at a Ryokan but do not want to pay an arm and a leg, then this is the place to go to! The rooms were lovely, the onsen great, and the owner a warm and accommodating chap. It is a bit far from most attractions, but in Hakone, any accommodation close to attractions will cost you a lot. Yes, like many others have said, the owner can't speak english at all. I know basic japanese so it wasn't a problem, but even if you know no japanese, rest assured the owner will try his best to help and understand you. You'll get to practice some sign languages ;)

Nice little ryokan in excellent location”
This ryokan is just a few steps from the 2 bus stops which have the majority of Hakone buses so it's very convenient. The room is really spacious, clean and warm. The onsen is small but nice. We also love the Japanese style breakfast. The owner was so nice and he even gave us hand warmer pack when we checked out. Wished I had stayed for more than 1 night!

Lovely Ryokan”
The rooms were lovely and clean and the owner, Konno-san (forgive me if this is misspelled) was incredibly kind and helpful. He even gave us some candy from Hakone when we left. The location is great and the price can't be beat. If you're in Hakone, definitely stay here! I dream and hope to come back to it one day.

Retro Ryokan!”
the hotel was easy to find and the perfect distance away from the crowds around hakone. when we stayed only half the hotel was occupied so we were able to get one of the onsens to ourselves. our plan did not include any meals but there is a delicious chinese restaurant around the corner (recommended by the owner), as well as a supermarket and local cuisine. everything does shut early though so be prepared to have your dinner by 7pm. the hotel was getting a little shabby and everyone shares the toilets, but it is private, quite and spacious. it was a lovely little place to rest our weary bodies after a day gallavanting around the hakone countyrside. our beds were made when we got there and the room was nice and warm thanks to the thoughtful staff having turned on the heating for us. the manager does not speak english but they do have some pamohlets in english and there is a letter from the hotel which is written in japaness and english to explain the hotel rules. overall, if you are looking for somewhere quite to rest your heads with an onsen, masuya will take care of you. it is a no-frills stay but seriously all we needed was a bed and the onsen! thanks.

Traditional Homestay!”
very traditional jap style homestay! the onsen can be used privately if made known to the owner in person. Jap clothings provided for the night to change into and the owner was nice to provide hot japanese tea and biscuits for the winter season. Although check-in time is stated as 3pm, he allowed us to park our luggage earlier so that we can explore Hakone hassle-free! thumbs up! nearest bus stop would be sengoku bus stop just outside T junction. Bus T. followed by a 5min walk. might have to drag the luggage along a rough gravel road before u reach the accomodation.

5 Star Service ”
Friendly House owner who guide us around the Hakone area even-though they speak minor English but body language of おじ ちゃん was supper. Comfortable room with great condition and cleanliness. Onsen is super nice and it allow us to reserve by 1st come 1st serve basis. There is family mart and Chukoku Ryori that really serve nice meal nearby with walking distance.

Charming place that felt authentic. ”
More of a budget ryoken onsen but i enjoyed it. Rooms were nice and Japanese style. Shared bathrooms and onsens were pretty clean and i didn't have too much a problem waiting for showers or toliets. The two old guys running the place are very friendly and provide good service but speak very little english. Place was easy to find right off the bus stop. A few restaurants around but some where closed when I was there. Easy access to other parts of Hakone but quiet, beautiful area. Breakfast was traditonal Japanese, tasty, and lots of food.

Nice ryokan in Hakone ”
It's a nice Ryokan in the Hakone region. The room was as expected : comfortable, warm, tidy and calm. There is a television, a private air-con which allow you to choose the temperature adn tea will be waiting for you when you arrived. There is also 2 hot bath/onsen which can be freely used as a first arrived first serve basis. It's just nearby the "petit prince museum" which is a bit far from the train station, but there is a direct bus line to come from the train station. Just ask a staff, thay are very friendly.

Nice but not very clean”
The Ryokan was quite nice and I liked the room. Also the owner was very kind and service was gerat - we got fresh vegetables and/or sweets every afternoon or evening after returning from our trips. Unfortunately the common bathroom was not very clean. Also as pointed out in several other reviews, there was a strange smell in the rooms (it smelled a bit old) and, even more annoying, there was some exhaust fume smell in the hallway which I could not locate. I visited in the winter so this smell might have been associated with the heating - perhaps it's not smelly in the summer season. Speaking of winter, the hallways were not heated and the temperature was about 15°C which may be a bother to rather sensitive people (you need to go through the hallway to access the bathroom or toilets). In the room itself there was an electric heater though, and the temperature was fine. All in all I am not sure if I would recommend this hotel for winter season, but in the summer it might be a great place

An authentic old charming Japanese home”
Value for money: Yes, cheapest we can find for a private room for two Location: Not too bad, 5minutes walk from Sengoku bus stop. But the path towards the ryokan is a bit rocky Cleanliness: Room is clean yes, but there's the sulfur smell in the whole house due to the Onsen water coming from the volcanic source. But overall it is acceptable Staff: Kind gentleman. He gave us oranges and Japanese sweets during our stay. Always greeted us at the ryokan entrance when we come back. But he speaks little english so usually we use google translate, type in english to translate to Japanese and showed him the map translation on our phone. Facilities: This is an authentic old fashioned ryokan. It reminds me of my Grandmother's house. It is a charming house so, don't expect brand new high end facilities here.

Pretty hard to find, pretty enjoyable to stay”
Quite hard to find especially if you don't know where in Sengokuhara to alight from the bus. But once found, it was a gem to enjoy the large space in the room, the very private onsen that we could even share as a couple, and the exceptionally enthusiastic ryokan owner who catered to our every need. Would definitely return here if in Hakone.

Authentic Ryokan Experience for Cheap”
I had a great time staying in Hotel Masuya, I wish I only had more time to enjoy myself in the comfort of it's tatami lined room. It also has certified onsens, which were a great thing to do after a long day out walking.

Standard to Good”
The Onsen Room is indoor & small. If you go to Japan to try the onsen, I recommend you to look for a hotel which has outdoor onsen. So you can enjoy the nature and feel Japanese culture bathing onsen together. No Dinner provided even you are willing to pay. So Coldddd in Hakone. The staffs dont understand english too much.. A bit expensive but in high season, this is the cheapest ryokan i was able to find..
