Hakone Kowakien TEN-YU
Hakone,Hakone - View on map
"Hakone Kowakien Tenyu met my expectation in every way. We are a family of 4 and have booked 2 rooms for our stay. Our flight to Tokyo was delayed by 2 days due to Typhoon so we didn't have time to enjoy Hakone before our hotel checkin. We had a day tour in Tokyo instead and was dropped off to the hotel by our driver at 7:00pm. Due to our change in plan, we had to cancel our spa reservation at this hotel. With our reservation package, each lady/girl received a very pretty yukata kimono to wear during our stay and to bring home. We dressed and had an excellent multi course Kaiseki meal at their restaurant. Staff were attentive and provided excellent service. My daughter is allergic to fish and they designed a totally different menu for her to enjoy. After dinner, my daughters enjoyed the private spring soak in their room while I tried the public bath. It was a great experience. The whole place is zen and tranquil. The outdoor bath is an infinity pool with an excellent view. The next morning, we woke up early and enjoyed their beautiful scenery and private garden. We took lots of beautiful photos in our kimonos. Later we tried the other outdoor public bath which showcased a natural waterfall with beautiful rocks surrounding the area. Our skin and hair felt so smooth and glowing after the bath. Their multicourse breakfast in Japanese and Western styles were both excellent. You can tell that they put an effort in ensuring guests have a good experience here. Reception staff helped us arranged a taxi transfer to the train station. Everything went well. Their gift shop carries lots of local and private brand products which are all reasonably priced. I bought all my Hakone souvenirs from here. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Hakone. I feel refreshed after the night. Next time I will try their spa service. "

Hakone Onsen Sanso Nakamura
Hakone,Hakone - View on map
"We had a wonderful one night stay at the Nakamura ryokan. This is a traditional, small family owned establishment set in the lush Hakone forest. We had the dinner/breakfast package, which I would definitely recommend as it was delicious and excellent value. The owners were very welcoming, and speak some English. The two onsens were very nice, and the larger one has beautiful views through the bamboo. The tatami rooms are large (ours had a separate dressing room and small seating area), and the shared toilets and sink were just outside the room. The hotel is only a 5-10 min walk from the nearest bus stop, although (like much of Hakone) up a very steep hill. Alternatively, a taxi from Gora train station is ~1800 yen. Hakoneyumoto station also has a luggage delivery service (800 yen) - leave your bag before midday and head out sightseeing, and your bag will be at your hotel by mid-afternoon. "

"Tiring walk up steep slopes if attempting from Gora station. Best to take bus to 3rd stop and walk horizontally across flat road to hotel. Every stop goes up a steep slope! Hotel has free coffee and drinks at lobby. Free message chairs at level 2. Our rooms come with a 45 mins private onsen each. But do wash up t the common bath first as its only onsen inside the room. MUST opt for the dinner! It's super worth it with many courses and taste great. Our 2 sets of adults can feed our 2 young kids too. Also can do extra order of their zuwaigani (snow crab) for 30k yen. It's a whole crab and great to share it's sweet meat. And hotel have free shuttle to Gora station only, and last timing is about 12pm, so do check with reception to book. "

"Great to have shuttle service from train station. Very friendly and helpful front desk who helped us to booked for luggage transport service to Odawara station, so we can explore Hakone attractions before going back to Tokyo. We initially asked whether we can store the luggage after checking out / any luggage storage service nearby, he recommended the luggage transport service. Loves the small onsen tub in our room, the room is super spacious and also loves the products samples provided in the public onsen room. "

"Gora is a really countryside suburb. There are only a few restaurants available in town. If you want a getaway trip, this would be great for you. I did not book dinner with the ryokan. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants were closed as we arrived at 6pm. We searched around for over 30mins but the rest was all full. We ended up going back to the ryokan and luckily they showed us a really hidden restaurant. I would suggest to book the meals with them and enjoy your time in hot springs. There was not much to explore nearby and you would probably want to spend most of your time there. The room type is particular - is better than the other ones we stayed."

"This was an excellent place. The baths are lovely and clean. There are two private baths you can book half hour timeslots, and gender-separated public baths that are open for you to visit whenever. Service was excellent; most of the staff speak only Japanese but with Google Translate and lots of gestures, we got on just fine. Some of the lobby staff speak English so you won't be stranded. English menus and signs are all available. Their gift shop was lovely and OMG THE FOOD. SO MUCH FOOD. They serve you breakfast and dinner. You do not need lunch at all. The dishes were all unique, very Japanese, richly flavored, and perfectly made. Our room overlooked Mount Hakone and a lovely bamboo forest. The only warning I would give is that, since you're in the mountains with outdoor baths, be careful of the various insects that you might encounter. The ryokan itself is lovely and clean, but bugs around the outdoor baths cannot be helped."

Onsen Guest House Tsutaya

"As a young single student Western woman traveler, this place was ideal. It was extremely affordable, easily navigable to everything I wanted to see, and provided the most amazing onsen experience. Be warned: there is no giant sign on the road with the name of the place. Be sure you use google maps to figure out you’re at the right spot. There isn’t an elevator from the street level to the lobby, so be prepared for some stairs. The place was practically empty when I stayed. I had both the indoor and outdoor onsen co plenteous to myself both at night and the following morning. The staff is great, the capsule rooms are the biggest I’ve ever stayed in, and the mattress was actually comfortable which was a capsule hotel first for me. "

"Booked to rooms. One for my dad. And one for myself and my girl friend. I made a mistake and somehow booked 2 rooms for 2 people. Instead of for 3 people. Upon arrival we were left for over 30 mins whilst they looked into our booking. Then charged us double the amount we had paid for 2 night for 2 people just to add the additional person into a room that we already had booked. Absolutely disgusting. The onsen is not a onsen at all and most of the females area was closed. There was no offer of pick up or drop off and the entire stay was tainted because of this hotel. Do NOT stay here "
