Southern Cross Inn Matsumoto is located very close to the iconic Matsumoto Castle, as well as the tourist centre. Most of the key attractions in Matsumoto (City Museum, Nakamachi St, TimePiece Museum, train station, expressway bus terminal etc.) as well as restaurants are within a leisurely 10-20 minute walk. Great location, yet quiet because it is tucked away from the main street. The room is compact and clean, and has everything you need for a weekend getaway. Highly recommended!

Perfect location if you want to visit Matsumoto Castle. Walking distance to JR Matsumoto as well. Staffs are kind and very accommodating. Breakfast is so yummy.

Very pleasant stay”
We arrived around 6pm, it was already dark so a bit hard to find the hotel just by using google map. Hotel is not close to the train station, and words on google map are all in japanese so had quite a trouble finding it. However, when we arrived we were greeted by this lovely man at reception. He's quite old but very energetic and helpful. Very pleasant to deal with. He explained about Matsumoto and its attractions, etc. Check in was smooth. The hotel room was comfortable, from its bed, pillows, toiletries, amenities, etc. Towels, yukata and slippers are provided. Hot bath and shower, toilet was spotless, so does the room. I did say that location isn't very close to the train station, but its about 2-3mins walk from Matsumoto Castle. Would be happy to stay here again if I ever visit Matsumoto in the future. Good value and excellent location”
Stayed a family with 2 children for 1 night on visit to Matsumoto. Room was large enough with 3 double beds for us all. It's located on a quiet street 5 min walk from the famous castle entrance. There are lots of places to eat around the place as well. A big plus for us was the guesthouse parking that allowed us to leave the car for a very reasonable cost just around the corner. Stuff were friendly yet speak only minimal English, they offered us to leave the car for longer at the carpark w/o extra charge as well. On the other hand breakfast was not very good value for money and was mostly Japanese

Friendly staff and good service. But they don't have parking. But no need to worry about it. They will arrange a parking lot for a cheap price. Hotel is very close to Matsumoto Castle. It's a 2 minute walk from the hotel.

Extra clean room with a fridge, a kettle, and table and 2 chairs. Ideal for having a snack in the room. Located just between the shrine and the castle, and 10-15min away from the station. Only drawback : no supermarket nearby. Staff was not really speaking English but tried their best to understand. Allowed us to let our luggages the full check-out day, until we take the train at 6pm. Would recommend

I would recommand if you don’t care about the « look » of your hôtel. The location is very good, 5 min on foot from the castle, perfect for a little walk at night to see him (awesome at night!), it’s clean and the staff is nice. But be aware that it’s very old so don’t be surprise ;-)

It is a good hotel with complete facilities that you would need for a comfortable stay but the walls were kinda thin because I can hear the person in the other room. The aircon also has a weird smell so I mostly turned it off during my stay.

Budget and location is ok”
Good for your budget. From Matsumoto station, you will pass by the old street when you’re walking to the hotel. Mattresses are kinda old and bathroom are kinda old. I can feel a bit of the springs. Staff are very kind and helpful. Breakfast is 500yen, very cheap, selection is very small but the taste pretty good. There’s only some meatballs, sausages, omelette, rice, miso soup, orange, yoghurt, bread and cereal. Very small selection. But cheap and good.

Cleanliness is bad”
I booked non-smoking room but it still smell like smoking. I'm so disappointed with it because the smell is coming through the AC vent. I cannot open the A/C so I opened the windows and it's the cold night made me really upset with it. The bed is hard and not comfy. But it still value for money and great location near shopping street. The parking fee is cheap(600 a day). Staff is good and really helpful. You have to admit that this is the old hotel and can't expect more. Book at your own risk but for me, I won't recommend my friends to stay here.

Although it’s a Double room but the bed size is consider only a Super Single bed. We are typical adult Asian size and already find the bed a bit squeezy.

Great location and price”
We stayed here two nights recently. The Southern cross is a very tidy well located hotel. a 5 minute walk to the castle nd also the Nakamichi area, its ideal. It also is only 600 metres from the main station. We spent the little extra and booked the larger room. Is well worth it, twice the floor area so you can spread out a bit. The rooms were very clean. The bathroom excellant. The breakfast at 500Yen a head is also very good value. Staff were very helpful. and there is even a free coffee machine in the lobby. Well worth staying here.

Really friendly staff”
The Southern Cross is just a short walk from the station, in a neighborhood with plenty of nice restaurants around and close to the castle. The staff is extremely friendly, and we even got little gifts when we checked in. The room is quite small (but aren't they all in Japan), bed quite small for 2 (1.20m), but the staff seriously made up for all that.
