Charming Hotel in Old Bagan”
Conveniently located by the Tharabar Gate, The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate was a great choice for our stay in Bagan. We stayed for 2 nights and would be happy to return for my future trip. A few highlights: 1) The hotel has arguably the best location to explore Bagan - it's pretty much at the central point in between Nyaung U and New Bagan and close to the several major temples (Thatbyinnyu, Dhammayangyi, Sulmani, Ananda, Htilominlo, to name a few). Many temples are within walking distance and easily reachable with a bike ride. 2) The hotel/resort is nicely laid out, all rooms have individual private garden (small but nice) and the room itself is spacious. The decoration (with a lot of wood and natural colours) gives a great sense of relaxation. 3) Service was great - both the front desk staff and staff we had during the turn-down service were friendly and helpful. 4) Wifi connection at the lobby was one of the best I had in Burma. Connection from the room however can be sometimes tricky. 5) Breakfast was great with an egg/pancake/waffle station; you can choose to sit under the trees by the pool. 6) There is a bike rental shop right outside the hotel where you can rent the bike at a slightly cheaper rate than what the hotel charges you (USD 5 for a day). There are also a couple of restaurants and stores nearby within walking distance. Overall - love the location and charm of this hotel. I would recommend it to my other friends visiting Bagan.

Best location and best rooms in Bagan”
Wonderful location amongst the ancient temples of Bagan. Easy to ride bicycle or catch a horse-cart. I wanted to photograph during sunrise and sunset, and I could easily step out of my room and walk or get on a bike and be right there. If we had stayed in New Bagan, or the road between Old and New Bagan, it would have taken a half hour or more travel time to get to the ruins. Not as convenient. The rooms, bungalow actually, are lovely. Very spacious with high ceilings, beautiful murals and artwork, comfortable beds. Great air conditioning (Bagan is a desert!). We loved our room and it was a wonderful base to see the ruins, then come back home to cool down and refresh. The staff was friendly and accommodating, helping us to rent bicycles and a horse cart (which are right outside the hotel. Very nice breakfast buffet, nice choices. Homemade yogurt and breads. Good Asian food choices, and the Burmese coconut noodles are delicious. The swimming pool was having algae problems, but they provided transportation to a nearby hotel to use their swimming pool. The internet wi-fi is available only in the reception lounge. Would be nice if we could get internet in our bungalow, but the fact that internet is available in Bagan at all is amazing. We chose Tharabar Gate Hotel for the convenience of online booking and for the pool. It was a splurge, but totally worth it to have this level of comfort in the desert and the convenient location amongst the ruins. We'll definitely stay here again when we return to Bagan.

Lovely hotel”
I loved nearly everything about my stay at The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate located in Old Bagan, Myanmar! The few problems were minor for me. I stayed in a deluxe room down a lovely path through gardens, past other rooms, about as far from the front as possible. The solitude of that location and garden views through large windows was lovely! The boy who helped with my bags to/from the room was very helpful in other ways: showing me how the safe worked, etc. and helping me contact guides, a horsecart driver and a taxi driver. The housekeeping staff was also excellent--cleaning, making the bed daily, bringing a bowl of fruit the first day, and turn-down service, closing the drapes, and leaving sweets and flowers on the bed each night! The location of the hotel was a short walking distance from several restaurants of various price ranges (I found the hotel restaurant too expensive), and across the street from a very interesting market. And I could easily walk to literally countless Buddhist temples and stupas, etc., built during the 10th to 13th C., for which Bagan is famous! Also used a horsecart twice--easy to arrange. My only complaints: inconsistent internet service (common in Myanmar) and some of front desk staff could have been friendlier and smiled more. Compared to all the good, these were very minor!

charming Boutique hotel in the heart of old bagan”
Wonderful. The staff greated us promptly with a delicious cold lemongrass drink and cold towel in there lovely lobby area while they efficiently checked us in and took care of our baggage and escorted us to our room and toured the grounds. Very cordial staff. Their English is decent for basic communication. The room was nice good air conditioning, lay out, quiet, private. The Myanmar massage and reflexology was great at their spa. The pool ground was nice, pretty architecture and lay out, not too crowded during the hot days in bagan though some of the guests had young children that were a bit loud, crying and throwing tantrums with parents that didn't console them or ameliorate the problem. In addition, some guests brought some of their own loud obnoxious music that was blasting on the common pool ground area which was uncourteous and ruined the ambiance for other guests. It would have been nice if the staff had them turn it off.one other nuisance were guests smoking on the pool ground. This is not enjoyable. I would like to see them have a no smoking policy on the pool ground area as it is not fair for other guests to breath second hand smoke when laying out at the poolside trying to enjoy their vacation. There should be a designated area for smoking. Overall if we were to go back to bagan we would stay there again. The location can't be beat. Very close to walking to some good local restaurants ( the moon) and easy to explore the ancient pagodas, stupas and temples as it is next door to the electric moped shop which we rented for two days with our guide wagi ( best guide ever! The movie star if bagan. Everyone there knows him!!!) to drive around and get places that cars can't get to or that would be bumpy, uncomfortable and difficult to get to. Overall tharabar gate was a great little escape for us in the old city of bagan. It keep a nice authentic feel of being away from it all. It was not crowded with large tour groups which some of the other hotels are

Large comfortable rooms w character in Old Bagan”
I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with my retired parents and we shared a double room with extra bed for myself. The room was very spacious and the extra bed was a proper bed and not just a flimsy mattress. The hotel is a boutique style hotel with the rooms all being in small houses in a beautiful garden setting and build in holiday resort style. They had a nice pool as well, pretty decent in size (I think about 20 - 25 meters in length) with a nice restaurant by the pool side. We tried the food there once, on the last night and the food and service was very good. Must try the ice cream for dessert, I think it was home made! The other good point about the hotel was the location, very close to Old Bagan city, just 10 meters from the Tharabar gate, so you can explore the Old Bagan on food and hire a transport to go to the further away parts of Bagan's temples and craft centers. Service was very good, friendly and the only negative I can think of is the aircon which was pointed to the double bed and if on (even on a high degree) would be very noisy and blasting the air out. If switching it off, the room would get stuffy. The tap water in this part of Myanmar is not for drinking, and looks a bit murky (including the pool water), but it is not dirty - just don't drink. Free drinking water is provided in the hotel.

Great Location & Refuge from the heat in Old Bagan”
I spent 2 nights in Nyuang U and 2 nights at the Hotel @ Tharabar Gate in Old Bagan. It was nice to have stayed in 2 different locations, as it made seeing the sights and going out to different restaurants at night that much easier. This hotel was one of the best values for the money of all the places I stayed for 2 weeks in Myanmar. The rooms are spacious, and have little patio areas in the back. Bathrooms are very modern. Staff is very friendly. Breakfast selections were fantastic. Beautiful pool area. They do not have free bicycles on site as my other hotel did, however they can arrange one for you for 6000k per day, or you can do as I did and walk across the street to the rental place and get one for only 4000k. There are several good restaurants in walking distance, and this is a great location from which to explore many many amazing stupas.

Amazing hotel in great location.”
We loved this hotel it was the highlight of our trip to Myanmar.Beautiful hotel in fantastic location right at Tharabar Gate where you can access all pagodas by few mins walk or bike ride. We hired bikes and spent the day riding around and looking at all the historical sights. We caught a local bus outside hotel into downtown Bagan for an afternoon at markets. The rooms were spacious clean and comfortable and they turn down your bed at night and spray for mosquitoes. Staff were friendly and treated us so very well. Restaurant had a mix of western and asian food and breakfast was western and plentiful. We did our sightseeing and returned in afternoon for happy hour by the pool where drinks were 50% off! Pool was out of order during our stay but they organised a return taxi to a nearby hotel so we could use their facillities free of charge. Also get a Myanmar massage at end of the day in the day spa=bliss!

Lovely spot amongst the ruins”
the hotel @ tharabar gate is an excellent choice for travelers wanting to be in the thick of things in bagan. it is conveniently situated near the old bagan temple cluster and great restaurant options like be kind to animals the moon, a great vegetarian restaurant despite its odd name. the ambience at the hotel was great - it truly felt like an oasis amongst dry and arid bagan. massages at the spa are recommended, as is the buffet breakfast, if this doesn't come with your stay. staff were courteous and kind and left nothing wanting. overall, the hotel was a thoroughly enjoying experience; highly recommended.

Best location in Bagan”
The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate is undoubtedly the best hotel in Old Bagan and wonderfully well situated right in the midst of the temples. The reception area is spacious and airy, the restaurant open to an attractive pool and rooms well-appointed with vast beds, fresh fruit and flowers daily and an outside patio area with loungers. Service is top-notch. Full marks are due for supplying a complimentary cake for my husband's birthday. But all this luxury comes at a price. The hotel is expensive, by Myanmar standards, and populated largely by older couples and small, upmarket tour groups. HIghly recommended for travellers with limited time in Bagan or those who manage to get a discounted room rate through a travel agent or online agency.

Beautiful Hotel! amazing grounds and amazing staff”
We stayed here two nights after leaving the Bagan River Hotel... booking on Agoda.com while at the River View. This place has a very nice peaceful vibe. We loved the staff and the room. After hearing of our bad experience at the River View, the Tharabar Gate Staff upgraded us to a Superior Room and gave us complimentary Fruit basket. I wish we could have stayed here for weeks! We didn't eat dinner in the hotel, because most of the hotels are much more expensive than the local restaurants. We ate right next door, but this hotel's location is really great. its walking distance to the Ananda Phaya, and a verrrry good vegetarian restaurant called The Moon. I would highly recommend staying here, and relaxing during their happy hour by the pool during the mid-day heat.

An oasis in the middle of the desert”
Situated in the old bagan, arriving in tharabar gate is like arriving home after a long journey. We loved everything from the jungle feel to the peacefulness of the place. We had a room near the pool and it's wonderful. Hotel staffs were friendly during the first two days. On the last day when we start having some request, they wanted to charge us for everything from hotel transfer of USD 10 to late checkout of USD 7 for every additional hour. We left feeling a little sad at the service on the last day but nevertheless this hotel is still worthwhile to visit because old bagan is clearly a lot less than busy than new bagan. Also it's highly recommended to hire a local guide to visit the temples with e-bikes.

Perfect stay at the heart of the arch. site”
We stayed one night at the Tharabar Gate Hotel on a short trip to Myanmar. We were very well received, the staff was quite helpful on helping us book some plain and bus tickets as well as giving us information on Bagan. The Hotel design very elegant, the common areas are lovely and the room was very spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. The location is just perfect as it allows you to return for a quick break or a refreshing dive in the pool during the day. Though not cheap we think it is an excellent value for your money.

Bagan on your doorstep”
Tharabar gate is a tranquil little oasis right in the middle of everything you came to Bagan to see. The rooms were giant and clean and close enough to the temples that you could easily stop back a the hotel and relax in your room when you needed a break from the sun. Food at the hotel was a bit expensive and not the greatest, but a number of restaurants are a very short walk away. The pool was a little bit dirty, but it was nice to sit next to it and enjoy the free wifi!

Lovely hotel in Old Bagan”
Couldn't have asked for more from the hotel @ Tharabar Gate. Location is great as a base to set out on an exploration of Old Bagan, whether it be by foot, a cycling tour or, if you are feeling lazy, a horse-cart tour of the vicinity. Pool caters for hot lazy afternoons and rooms were beautiful & comfy - with a small private garden to each room at the back!

Gorgeous”
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel @ Tharabar Gate. The rooms are large, like individual attached bungalows, and beautifully appointed. The grounds are beautiful, including a lovely swimming pool. The buffet breakfast was fantastic. A green haven in the dusty setting of Bagan.

Lovely stay in this resort hotel!”
We enjoyed our stay at the Tharabar Gate and loved the villa-like room. The grounds were beautiful and the meals were good. Staff didn't seem too overjoyed to be working there, but we found that to be true in the Bagan area in general. Hotel was in a good location for walking to many of the main temples. We were there during the new year festival, so music was super loud ALL NIGHT and we had to wear earplugs in order to get any sleep (but this wasn't the hotel's fault!)
