Great Getaway from the Bangkok Tourist Center”

Overstay is located in a residential neighbourhood that has proximity tourist sites, but is very authentically native Bangkok. Walk in one direction to find nighttime street food markets and in another to find a Bangkok supermall. The building itself fits the character of the surrounding neighbourhood, but with plenty of its own twists. It's a 6 floor (sorry, no elevator) building with artwork done in a number of styles from various artists that have stayed there over the years. I happened to be around for the 9th anniversary party, so that should give you some idea of the array of art styles. Speaking of the party, this is where the double-edged sword sword comes in. In addition to being a guest house, Overstay prides itself as being an independent art and entertainment venue. They welcome any artist to come in and play at any time and host regular DJs and bands. This can last until late hours and will not be for everyone. There are dorm and private rooms, both of which I stayed in during my time there. Both types of rooms are fairly basic, but the mattresses have certainly improved since my first stay. Every morning, I met the regular cleaning ladies who come in, wash all the empty floors and bathrooms, and will give you a change of sheets or clean your room if you let them know. Or alternatively, ask a staff member to ask them. Overall, I enjoyed my stay here tremendously. The atmosphere and people who stay and work there are fantastic and many are long-term or repeat visitors. This makes information very accessible and a great environment to make new friends or travel buddies.

Awesome place to meet like minded travelers”

I read a bunch of reviews of people complaining that the Overstay isn't fancy but it doesn't pretend to be fancy. The Overstay is awesome though. The rooms are basic but clean there are plenty of clean bathrooms and there is a great communal area that's a bar at night. The couple who run the Overstay are awesome, super helpful and accommodating if you need anything. I would reccommend anyone who can appreciate walls being covered in sweet graffiti art stay here. I know I'll stay at the overstay again.

Awesome place if you're into art and music!”

Friendly staff, feels like a home. Interesting events going on in the weekends. Musical instruments to jam with and walls to do art on. Stayed many more days than I was supposed to. Many vegetarian restaurants nearby. Only downside is that if you stay on thethe first floor the music might be loud at some point, I asked to move to another room and the helpful staff helped me out. Would recommend if you are into meeting new people and experience something outside of the norm of what a hostel is. This is a creative zone, home to some underground movements and a great place to tap into what life has to offer.

Well, I definitely did Overstay”

I booked for a couple nights including my first night in Bangkok with a flight arrival time of midnight. I was able to check in then (which I verified ahead of time via e-mail.) If you're allergic to cats...don't stay here. The hostel has some pet cats that hang out on the first floor. I had a single room which was only $1 more per night than the dorm. It was a bit loud on weekends, could get pretty hot, and the room was very basic. HOWEVER, it was a great value for the price. There were hot and cold showers available, a fan in every room, a pool table in the bar, a rooftop area, exercise equipment (I don't use that stuff), an area where people could leave things behind/pick up new things, friendly staff and guests, and it was close to lots of delicious street food. When I was there I had the privilege of sitting in on a free Thai lesson that made the last two days there WAAAYYYY easier to navigate. Smoking is allowed indoors here so the bar can get smoky but that's true of all the bars I've seen here. Extra perk: AMAZINGly fast and strong wi-fi. Overall, I had a great time staying here and extended my stay for a week. :)

Underground squat filled with art music and great vibes”

Came here for one night and stayed for the rest of my trip. Great people, great place. Has the vibe of Amsterdam squat with a touch of Thai. Very eclectic place in terms of what happens here and what people come here. If you like art, music, freedom - this is a place for you. There are great performances happening all the time, they cook Thai food every second evening, free pool table. And really amazing people. My room was clean and I slept very comfortably. On weekend you don't need to search for party because party happens on the first floor (and those are some of the best underground parties on Bangkok)

Great place for chill out and meet people!!”

The overstay is like a big hippie house where you can play instruments, make your own art and also meet amazing people! I totally recomend it! Also, you have the bus stop very close ao you can save a lot of money

A different place with a different vibe”

I enjoyed a lot my stay at this hostel. I had been to quite a few hostels in Bangkok, and in Asia in general, and I never really enjoyed the vibe at most of them. This one however was pretty different. Needless to say, it is a quite different hostel than the rest I been l have been in Bangkok. It is full of wall art, interesting people, pets and good music that makes the stay an awesome experience. If you are looking to have some fun and meet nice people, this is the place to be.

Best dive bar hostel in Asian ”

If you like street art, Dive bars, and super cheap beds you will love this place. I keep coming back every time I’m in Bangkok. It’s in a sleepy area away from the main tourist party drag but surrounded by all the best local street food you’d ever want. Always a friendly face and some good conversation over a frosty beer. Must like animals.

as an artist, I love this place to death”

The bed wasn't bad, and the reception was so friendly. I stayed with 3 others (4 in our group) and the reception guy let me carry up beds from the shared dorm to the double room we booked. [Book the double room if you stay here, it's a lot more comfortable] I CANNOT WAIT TO STAY HERE AGAIN SO I CAN DRAW. (I drew Harime Nui from Kill la Kill on one of the walls) the place is pretty clean, but toilet's disgusting as are all hostels.. I guess it wasn't thaat bad in cleanliness for the toilet... bleh (I'm from singapore so my standards for toilets are very high) Please please please, graffiti is allowed! When you stay here, draw on the wall with a marker. it doesn't have to be anything too fancy, just a heart with your names in it =)

Graffiti-filled Art house - chill and relaxed”

stay was good. graffiti on walls everywhere including some amazing art. Seems to be a hippie stoner crowd. It took forever driving around in a Tuk Tuk trying to find this place, called several times to get directions but no one answered. When I finally arrived at The Overstay Hostel, the guy behind the counter asked which website I used to book my room -- he said he's been trying a new booking site but the people who book through the site never show. I mentioned that the phone number didn't work and showed him my booking confirmation. He smiled "oops. that was my personal cell phone which I lost 9 month ago." Friendly staff made a special favour for me and gave me a wake-up call at 7am, came and knocked on my door. Shared bathrooms not so clean -- bring your own toilet paper and soap.

Feeling like home in Bangkok”

We directly felt like home when we entered Overstay. While checking in we got the question whether we were sure we would stay for only two nights.. We soon understood why. We could eat muesli, drink coffee, we could get in the room right away so we could rest. Although the bed was not as soft as our own, we overstayed and could have stayed longer if we had the time. The place and the other travellers there are inspiring! There is an equipped kitchen to use and possibilities to listen to/make music, play pool, look at/make murals and do yoga or relax at the rooftop terrace! Best place to stay for the somewhat more "alternative" traveller.

Very chilled out place with amazing art everywhere.”

The place has some of the coolest art I have ever seen, all the walls are covered in crazy, wild and awesome paintings, graffiti and messages from different traveller that have passed this place through the place. With very friendly staff and a couple of cool dogs, I would definitely recommend this place to proper old school backpackers who enjoy chilling with good people. Be warned though if you are a luxury kind of traveller who can't deal with a few broken bits and pieces, then you might not feel at home in this f***ing great place. Love the Overstay and would definitely send all my friends this way.

Cheap place to stay”

Quite charming if you can appreciate creativity, it's really colourful and artistic. The staff are friendly. $100 deposit for a padlock for your door unless you have your own. There are some sweet cats and dogs around, which is lovely. If you are worried about noise then dont stay on friday or sat - we stayed on sun & mon which were quiet, except for a half hour drum practice which started at midnight one night. 711 is 1 minute away. Kaosan road is 35 mins walk. There are bathrooms with cold showers & toilets on each floor. It is a no frills hostel with only the essentials. They have a drinking water tap which is a bonus! There are mosquitos and fleas about so pack some bug spray/ deet. Note: This hostel is out of the way. The buses are unreliable and a taxi can be a bit pricey due to the distance of everything, just double check location before you book. A solo backpacker should enjoy this place, theres a good level of friendliness and the bar has decent prices too.

Only stayed here one night but this hostel has a very good vibe and friendly staff! However this might not be for everyone since its not the most clean and comfortable, but I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a more unique and creative hostel, and meeting interesting people. I would come back here longer.

Everything that a hostel should be. Any of its flaws just serve to add to its charm. I will be coming back here every time I return to Bangkok.

I came here with the intention of staying one night as a stepping stone to finding somewhere else and ended up staying a few weeks. In all fairness id originally planned to stay in the dorm but as I walked into the dark vandalised bar area and was taken through the building to the dorm I felt it would be safer to stay in one of the single rooms. The room was quite stuffy with no windows but hosted a stand up fan and a double bed, I later discovered the extraction fan which made sleeping that bit easier. Note if you are a light sleeper u may struggle here but there are alternative rooms in this 6 stories building away from the noise. After getting to know the crowd and realising there not the thieving druggies I've read about on reviews I moved into the dorm (100bht) which was surprisingly more light, cooler and airy then the rooms and felt quite comfortable (it was a huge upgrade from one id stayed in in india). Basically with the overstay dont judge a book by its cover, u will b shocked, u will question where u are but give it a chance and ul see why it's called the overstay

Exceptional”

Very nice place to stay in Bangkok, not so far from the city center. I enjoyed my stay here, the dormitory is huge so everyone has his own space :) Thanks again!!

Perfekt for low budget backpackers”

This is a really fun place with music instruments a roof top hang out area and a bar with pool table. Because I am traveling low budget it was one of my favorite places on this trip in south east Asia because it has for very little money a lot to offer. The bathrooms are not new and not perfekt but that is none of my concern they Funktion. There is also a kitchen that you can use for free which I also really liked. The dormitory is even though it has no AC not too hot because of a huge fan that blows for the entire room. Reaching the city center is also pretty easy you can just jump into one of the buses that leave close to the door and it takes you 15-20 minutes to get to kaosan road. There will soon be a bts station too I think If you want to meet great people this is the place to go and if you're not afraid of dogs or cats because they hang out here too
