"Yes the room is small, but they put everything you need in that tiny room. There is a toiletries set provided to you daily, hair dryer, water boiler, LCD TV, locker, hangers and distilled water. The toilet is actually larger than I expected. The best thing about this hotel is its perfect location. Only 3 minutes walk from the MRT station. There are many shops and restaurants just downstairs. The famous Chinatown Yakun and Spizza are 10 minutes walk from the hotel. The corridors and rooms are a bit dark but for me it is acceptable. It is a little noise coming from the construction site near by. Yet, my Singaporean friend said this hotel is relatively expensive for a hotel in Chinatown."

"the location is near Outram Park MRT Station and it is only takes a few minutes of walking distance to reach chinatown point and other chinatown heritage attractions. There is a lot of restaurants near the hotels. The room is clean and tidy, it will be better if skylight room have larger space to walk. The staffs are friendly and helpful."

"From the very first interaction with staff we were very pleasantly surprised. Driveway staff were helpful, check in staff were magnificent - Manager even accompanied us to our room with the bellboy. That attentiveness from all staff continued throughout our stay. As a newer hotel in Chinatown some taxi drivers were unsure of where it was, but that never turned into a problem. Location on the edge of Chinatown is great. And free internet actually worked at high speed!"

"iStay Inn was an amazing experience. At first when looking at the pictures, I was unsure, because of the artwork on the wall. But once I got there, it had a very quint feeling to it, just felt like staying at a friend's place. Don't be fooled by the 'urban art', this was just a theme to the hostel and the rooms were white and clean. The staff was amazing and very friendly, I ended up becoming friends with the owner of the hostel. She's an amazing person and always there to help. Makes an effort to make sure you have a good stay at the hostel. The people I met at the hostel were great also, they were very respectful of the after 11pm quiet time. At night, you can just sit outside (like a balcony), and just chat with other travellers. It was pretty cool. The room itself was very clean and air-conditioned. It was sufficient room for me (solo) and it had lockers, bed lamp and outlet plug for each bed. I stayed in a room with no windows which I liked because it was quiet, but even the windowed rooms were pretty quiet (the hostel was away from all the bars). Location, you can't beat this location, it's at the prime area in Chinatown, and you're walking distance from Club st. (The street with bars and restaurants). Even though, you're one street off Club st., I couldn't hear any noise from that street. And you definitely couldn't hear any noise from Chinatown. Facilities, the washroom was very clean and the showers were fine. Don't expect it to be luxurious, it just has the basics soap / shampoo. For breakfast, there was free fruit and bread which you can use to toast, and some peanut butter and jam. Nothing fancy, it was sufficient. I think for what you pay for, it's a great deal. My criteria's for choosing a hostel was that it was clean, quiet and location, and iStay Inn satisfied all 3. Thanks for making my experience in Singapore memorable. If I plan to come back, I'll definitely stay at iStay Inn again! "

"Overall we enjoyed our stay. Staff were friendly & helpful, amenities were good. We were in 2 bedroom apartment, bedroom sizes were good however the bathrooms were very small & had little bench space. Lounge area was ample but taken up with an oversized coffee table. While showering the bathroom floor often flooded (due to poor drainage) which was annoying, hopefully will be attended to. Apart from that, a comfortable stay in nice modern apartment. Kids enjoyed the pool. We found it easy to walk to MRT station & Tiong Bahru Plaza (which has supermarket & food court), walking thru Beo Cresent (walkway is undercover). Location was an issue for some taxi drivers who didn't know where to go but we mainly travelled on MRT as it was the most efficient way to get to areas such as Chinatown, Orchard Rd, & Marina Bay. Would stay again when travelling with kids, good value for 2 bedroom apartment in quiet location."

"stayed here with a friend and they made us very very welcome. the room was small but comfortable and clean with good bathroom and great shower. we did have a window but shutters would not open-a shame as i like to see the view! no other quibbles, though, the location in tiong bahru is excellent-a quiet neighbourhood, really interesting to walk around. a short walk to chinatown or to the mrt. one of the reasons for choosing the hotel was its proximity (just over the road) to tiong bahru market with its famous food centre. this certainly did not disappoint! some of the best food i've ever tasted and a nice open setting to eat it in. the everyday market downstairs is also well worth a look. for swimmers or even non-swimmers there is a lovely pool terrace on the roof of the hotel with a view over the trees and the surrounding area. would definitely recommend the nostalgia if you'd like a taste of old style suburban singapore."

"Excellent. I have stayed at the best 5 star hotels in Singapore on Orchard Road but got tired of paying $250 per night. The Southbridge is very cheap by comparison but much better. It is in a beautifully converted old shophouse, but done up internally in a stylish and modern way, everything new and clean. Only a few months open so new beds, new bedding, new bathroom fittings, flat screen TV, free wifi, etc. Very friendly staff. Very secure. Need a key to use the elevator both up and down, and an electronic room safe for passport, etc. There is a nice bar with boutique beers at street level. It is 1 min walk to Chinatown MRT and so one can easily travel the whole island from there. It is also 1 min to the famous Chinatown restaurants and bars not to mention an Islamic Mosque, a Hindu Temple and a Bhuddist temple. Surprisingly, it is also very quiet, the windows seem to be double glazed so very little noise. There is also a 24/7 self service laundry only 5 mins walk away in Sago Lane. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and will stay there again. I was in a single room, there alone, on business, so I don't know what the rooms for couples and families are like. But I would be surprised if they were not as good as my room. If I had one complaint it is that they need cable TV. The TV has about 8 channels but about 6 of them dedicated to sport. I find sport boring and so had very little to watch when I wanted to chill out at the end of a night of Chinatown dining."

In and around Chinatown

More about Chinatown

Chinatown is one of Singapore’s most popular tourist destinations. It overflows with souvenir markets and affordable restaurants and karaoke bars that stay open late. It doubles as a genuine community of Chinese residents, many of whom live in colonial-era shophouses. Some of the most interesting hotels in Chinatown are housed in these same heritage buildings.

To gain a better understanding of how the Chinese community helped to build Singapore, guests can visit the Chinatown Heritage Centre between South Bridge and New Bridge roads. It occupies three shophouses, with each floor dedicated to a period in Chinatown history. Another interesting attraction is Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. It’s housed in a modern, pagoda-like building and features dozens of exhibits on Buddhism and Chinese culture.

Away from the museums, the real cultural attractions in Chinatown are right on the street. Merchant stalls on Temple Street and Pagoda Street are brimming with trinkets and souvenirs, while the antique markets on South Bridge Road have more to offer serious collectors. Head over to Smith Street for an enticing selection of food stalls serving Chinese noodles and other fast meals.

The only business-oriented hotels in Chinatown are next to the Ministry of Manpower office building northeast of Pearl’s Hill City Park. Otherwise, Chinatown caters mostly to budget travelers who favor cultural activities and affordable nightlife over posh amenities.
